RACINE SUNDAY BULLETIN C A Sundoy, July 4, 1965 Punch Mars 'Rights' March in Mississippi : JACKSON, Miss. —UP) — Civil rights workers, march ing in pairs, paraded through downtown Jackson, Miss. Saturday, protesting segrega tion policies. A white man punched s ;march leader, the Rev. Allen Johnson, in the face. Police quickly grabbed the man and hustled him off. Officers said later the man identified as Billy McPhail 50, was Charged with assault and drunkenness. Rev. Johnson laughed off the punching. incident. He did not appear hurt from the one punch. Initiated and planned by i group of Jackson Negro min isters and businessmen, the march quickly swelled when members of the Freedom Democratic Party joined, al though they had been asked not to participate. Saturday shoppers paused briefly and cast curious glances at the column of pairs walking through downtown Jackson, around the gover nor's mansion and city hall, both of Civil War vintage. 90-Degree Weather Some of the marchers carried signs protesting segregation. Others, wearing wide- brimmed straw hats in the 90 -degree weather, walked and stared straight ahead. • This was the third march since the city was ordered by a federal appeals court to halt its policy of "instant arrests," which had resulted in the jailing of more than 1,000 demonstrators since June 14 The original marches by the Freedom Dernocratic Party came when Gov. Paul Johnson called a special legislative session, which saw passage of several laws that eased restrictions on voting. The Citizens Co-ordination Committee called Friday for a march of only Jackson resi dents to show support of the earlier marches by the FDP, composed of mostly non-local persons, a large number of out of state. Ranks Increase The committee, composed of local Negro ministers and businessmen, launched the march at midmorning, but when it passed FDP headquarters, _a large body of the party's supporters joined. Committee officials made no move to prohibit the FDP from joining. Members of the committee included Charles Evers, field secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Rev. Allen Johnson, cha- ter chairman of the Southern Christian Leadership' Conference. Motorcycle police followed the marchers and two Negro policemen walked alongside. Other officers directed traffic and kept the marchers obey ing pedestrian ordinances. The city said upon receipt of the court order by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans that it would make no arrests unless demonstrators did not follow guidelines set down in the ruling.
