PURTELL, FORMER MAJOR LEAGUE INFIELDER, DIES Bradenton, March 17 (AP) William Patrick Purtell. 76, former major league infielder and one-time teammate of Ty Cobb, died at a rest home today. Purtell, who played with the Chicago White Sox in 1908-1910, was with the Boston Red Sox 1910-1911 and a teammate of Cobb with the Detroit Tigers in 1914. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Purtell was a landscape engineer later years and moved here three years ago.

Marine, and New Zealand's Peter Snell, the world's outdoor mile record holder, won their specialties in ordinary fashion today in Japan's two day International Indoor track and field championships. The 24 year old Uelses leaped 15 feet 1 inch, almost a foot short of his record-breaking effort of 1634 at the Boston AAU games Feb. 4. Snell, running his first indoor mile race, was timed in 4:06.7. This was considerably slower than the unofficial world indoor record of 3:58.9 set by Jim Beatty of the Los Angeles Track Club on Feb.
