4-Ti MAY J, 1070 T)KS MOINES REGISTER By Mary Hryson CD)e JLealster 1 * - Home Furnishlnos Editor!"" W orking" wives, busy" teen - agers -a n d tired husbands don't have time to wash and dry the dishes. These, days they don't have to. In more and more kitchens, the automatic dishwasher talces over these chores. —If you haven't- shopped for a dishwasher lately, you'll be . surprised at some of the convenience features that have been added in recent years. Not all the models on the market have every feature, though_many_ of them are now standard in most lines. Check these features and decide which you -want and need: Extra Cycles • You're assured of thorough dishwashing when the basic wash cycles include two forceful washes or a pre- rinse and/wash, followed by J\Vo_or x 1hree rinses ^ and a heated cycle. However, there are several special cycles that/will be work savers. LZTKeselScluHeTIITT ~ZZ I ' • Rinse and Hold — A short cycle for rinsing partial loads. You stick the break~ fast and lunch dishes out of sight, give them a hot rinse and then let them stand in the machine until you have^ accumulated a full load for a complete washing cycle. • China and Crystal — A short, gentle cycle for precious things. In many machines, the_ gush of water is . aerated so it will be less forceful. After a detergent wash, two rinses and a drying period complete the cycle. • Pots and Pans—A cycle de- signed for heavy washing. Powerful surges of water scrub the greasy pans clean, usually twice. This is followed by three rinses and a —slower drying time with low heat or no heat. • Sani-Cycle — Rinse water temperature is high enough to sanitize your dishes. This special cycle is available on some top-of-the line models. • Dish Warmer—Special convenience cycle provides heat only to warm dishes for serving meals piping hot. Some kind of filtering action is provided by most manufacturers. One type of filter 'nraps food particles washed from dishes and prevents them from going back through the spray arms to be recirculated. Waste Disposers Miniature waste disposers are built into some machines. These pulverize the soft food pieces and flush them away. Adjustable Loading The easiest way to find out if a dishwasher is the right size for you is to -load it mentally with your dishes. Take along your biggest mixing bowl or pan if you doubt the capacity. In many new machines, racks have movable parts to accommodate different-sized items. Some appliances have top racks which move up or down. Interiors Sturdy vinyl-coated dish racks will protect dishes and hold them securely. Porce- lain enamel, stainless steel, fiber glass or vinyl are easy- to-clean and Jong-lasting in• terior linings; ~~~ Controls _ Check to see they are clearly marked. Both dial and pushbutton controls are satisfactory. Dispensers ' The most convenient are the double detergent dispensers for double-wash cycles with a dispenser for rinse additives. These are' found in many top models, but the basic_ models may have only one detergent dispenser. Covered Baskets Small items, such as coffee spoons and lids are in danger" of being washed down into the impeller. A silverware basket with a covered section will prevent —this. HIRI2D GIRL GONE Forty years ago, it was easy .to hire household help. There were 420,119 domestics employed in American homes. In 1940, only 226,781 workers were listed. By 1959, the number had dropped to 140,296, and is less than 30,000 today. kT O'CALLAGHAN'S—3 STORES| Undercounter dishwasher by General Electric has a new "power scrub" cycle for heavy duty washing of grubby casseroles, greasy roasters or sticky bowls.
