vac. The New», Frederick, Md.. Wednesday, November 1,19S1 Carlson Hopes Eisenhower Is A Candidate PARIS. Nov. 20 «")--A personal friend of Gen, Dwight D. Eisenhower said today he is hopeful the general will run for the Presidency and declared that it he runs, it will be on the Republican ticket After an hour's conference with the Supreme Commander of the. Allied Powers in Europe. Sen. Frank Carlson (R-Kans) said: "If Gen. Eisenhower runs for President it will be on the Republican ticket. There is no question--there never has been any question--about that. I am hopeful that the situation will be such that he will be available." The talk was perhaps the longest session that Eisenhower has had with any visittng editor or politician in recent weeks. Carlson was asked point blank at a news conference at Eisenhower's headquarters after the interview as to whether they had talked politics. "Kansans never meet but that they get into politics." Carbon replied, Carlson is one of Eisenhower's , closest personal and political j friends and advisors, ranking next to Milton Eisenhower, the General's brother, and Roy A Roberts, president of the Kansas City Star. Think HP Will Run Carlson was only one of many . travelers who saw Eisenhower to- , day. but he is the only one who indicated that politics was brought up. j A party of tourinjj newspaper-, men brought to Europe bv the j Army to look at defense prcpara- j tions here pot a regular "pattern" I talk. They were given a detailed I briefing on military plam and wishes by Gen Alfred M Gruenther, Eisenhower's Chief of Staff Then Eisenhower gave them just such a talk as he has made publicly several times The North Atlantic Treaty Organization will succeed because it has to, and enlightened self-interest in Ihc West demands that th« defense program be supported. Not one of the visitors posed 8 political question, they said afterward None wanted to ao on record, but several said they were sure Eisenhower would run and had somehow indicated that to some of hi" friends. One icport- ed the talk Eisenhower gave them "sounded like a political speech." Conway Low Bidder On Bridge Lighting BALTIMORE.
