*<:. MOTfWBNTT ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH THURSDAY* 1% till New Opera Star War With Rhinoceroses Pot to Music §» RfCftAKD KMSWBR WBA Stuff ComapwtKfent NEW YORK <NRA) - A per- sonabie elephant In a green suit «•"* suddenly Irecom* an opera. Ah& many people seem happy about the who.e thjng H you find It difficult to imagine an elephant as the star of an opera, and a personable elephant withal, you Just don't know Barbar. He Is an unusual elephant, -is witness his remarkable strategy in the Great War Against fhe Rhlnoceruses. All this will come out in me- Jodie detail in "Babar", a new opera, and one of 'the few operas written sepcifirally 'or children. It's based on three children's books written in the '30s by Jean de Brunhoff. Among Babar's greatest fans were the two mildren of composer Nicola! Berezowsky, who has written, among other things, four symphonies, 10 concerto* and many pieces of chamber music. Bore- zowsky used tr rea^! the Babar Stories over and over to his youngsters. Need Children's Operas Last year, Thomas Scherman, conductor of New York's Little Orchestra Society, lamented the star- city of children's operas. Berezowsky figured he could do something about that, and pick-.-d Babar as his story Dorothy Heyward, coauthor of "Porgy and Bess," adapted the Babar books, Berezowsky's wife, Judith Randal, wrote the lyrics, and he did the music. In two months, Babar the Elephant became Babar the Opera. It is a live-happily-ever-after kind of story, about the elephant who is captured by a circus trainer, escapes with the help of a kind old lady, goes back to the Jungle, marries bis calfhood sweetheart and lives happily, etc. All in all, it takes an hour to run through t! e action in five scenes. That, explains Berezowsky, is about as long as a child can take at one time In other ways, "Babar" is planned for maximum youthful enjoynitnt l -the songs and dialogue are simple, the melodies hummable and ;he story easily understood. There's no "message" In Babar unless you want to call the fact that justice triumphs and the hero gets the girl a "message". The villain is Fernando, the trainer. The hero, of course, is Babar, and the heroine is the elephant princess, Celeste. "Babar combines dignity, wisdom and wit" Berzowsky says. "He wins the war against the rhi- noceruses without bloodshed and the elephants make him king. His great stoke of strategy is to paint the rear ends of all the elephants to look ferocious. That paralyzes the rhinoceruses with fear." Costuming and casting present minor problems. Since Babar and his fellow elephants in the illustrations of the books, walked upright, they do the same on the stage. Masks serve to make a baritone look, vaguely, like an elephant. Odd Antics In the circus scene, some of the actors are required to do such un- operatic things as standing on their heads and other tricks. This, of course, adds to the casting director's problems, but Bere- zdwsky says the first cast, assembled for the premiere in New York Feb. 21, handle all their stunts admirably. The character of Babar is sung by a baritone, in most operas, the leading man is a tenor but Berezowsky sais he couldn't conceive of an elephant with .a tenor voice. So Babar is a robust baritone. In fact, there is not a single part for a tenor in the opera "I was thinking of making Fernando a tenor". Bere/owsky says, with a glint in his eye, "but Fernando is villian enough without being a tenor." Women Now Ciet I'uid Many married women in, Chile are getting a break, thanks to the efforts of Senora Inez Enriques, the only women member in the Chilean Congress, Santiago reports. As a result of the passage of a bill she introduced, family and children's allowances hitherto paid by employers to husbands, now are being paid direct to the wives. Up to now, many husbands have drawn allowances without increasing the amount of housekeeping money they gave their wives. Hill to Have Crow The 2,058 people of Templemore, Kire, are working on a reclamation project in the spiritual sense. They aim to put a cross to Christ the King on the 1,577-foot-high spot on the Slieve Bloom Mountains, known for centuries as the Devil's Bit. In clear weather the cross may be seen from nine counties—Tipperary, Clare, Limerick, Cork, Waterford, Kilkenny, Laois, Qffaly and Galway. The 45- foot-high structure will be of concrete threaded, with steel bars. It may be illuminated by night. Antique* to Order A British, firm that makes silver-plated hollow-ware and cutlery has gone back 150 years for inspiration. "Victorian" pieces such as graced the tables of a century or more ago are selling like hot cakes in the United States and Canada. The "reproduction" tableware made by a Birmingham firm just wouldn't sell ia Britain, the company says. It's too ornate.
