THE BAYTOWN SUN Friday. August 21. 1«>87 3-A World news Hess family requests autopsy WUNSIEDEL, West Germany (AP) — The son of Rudolf Hess said Friday a second autopsy would be performed on his father's body because the family doubts the former Nazi leader committed suicide. A British doctor ruled on behalf of the Allies that Hess died Monday of asphyxiation after strangling himself with an electrical cord in West Berlin's Spandau prison. He was 93. British officials also said a suicide note was found in Hess' pocket. The contents of the note have not been revealed. Hess, former deputy Nazi fueher under Adolf Hitler, was convicted of war crimes during the Nuremberg tribunal in 1946 and sentenced to life in prison. About 6 million Jews were systematically murdered under the Nazi regime. "A second autopsy will be carried out on my initiative," Wolf-Ruediger Hess told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "In my opinion, neither the farewell note nor the British autopsy has removed my doubts about what has been called the suicide of my father," Hess said. 30 people die in bus crash JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) — A bus carrying black mineworkers plunged down a cliff Friday, killing 30 people and injuring 50, many critically, the South African Broadcasting Corp. said. The report said earlier that GO people had been killed but revised the figure based on reports from the police mortuary in Queenstown. The bus was bringing the miners from Oden- daalsrus, a mining town in the Orange Free State, to Port Elizabeth on the southern coast, the report said. Many miners who work in the Orange Free State are from Ciskei, a black homeland near the site of the accident. The report said about 20 ambulances from Port Elizabeth and surrounding towns were dispatched to the scene, between the towns of Queenstown and Fort Beaufort. There was no immediate word on what might have caused the accident, and the report did not include a description of the accident site. Many black miners engaged in the 12-day-old strike against major gold and coal mines have been leaving their hostels at mine compounds and heading for their homes in distant areas, Including Ciskei. However, the National Union of Mineworkers said it had no information indicating that strikers were aboard the bus which crashed. Aquino marks husband's death MANILA, Philippines (AP) — President Corazon Aquino led 2,000 people Friday in services marking the fourth anniversary of the assassination of her husband, without whom she said her country would be "sitting in darkness." After the ceremony, thousands of people marched through Manila shouting "Down with Cory!" and demanding she roll back fuel prices and increase workers' wages. About 1,500 police and troops stood guard near Malacanang Palace Friday as about 8,000 anti" Aquino protesters marched to the nearby Mendiola Bridge. Police strung barbed wire along the bridge blocking the street to the presidential palace. National news Child support payment drop WASHINGTON (AP) — Women's groups are reacting with dismay to a new government study showing that the average child-support payment to mothers on their own has dropped sharply. "I'm astounded." said Sara Rix of the Women's Research and Education Institute. Nancy Ebb of the Children's Defense Fund termed the findings •'certainly disheartening." And Ruth Sanders of the Census Bureau, who compiled the new report, said a drop in child- support payments is "certainly unfortunate." while admitting that the reasons are not clear. Her study found that child-support payments averaged $2,215 in 1985. down from £2.528 in 1983. in constant dollars adjusted for inflation. That is a drop of 12.4 percent. It wasn't the first time the average child-support payment has fallen, Sanders pointed out. with earlier studies finding a 16 percent decrease between 1978 and 1981. From 1981 to 1983 there was no significant change, she said. Shultz 'misunderstanding' WASHINGTON lAP) ~- Secretary of State George P. Shultz opposed the idea of persuading South Africa to donate aid to the Nicaraguan Contras in 1984, the State Department says. Spokeswoman Phyllis Oakley said Thursday that a chronology prepared for the congressional Iran- Contra committees "clearly shows the secretary's opposition in April of 1984 to the idea of going to other countries for assistance to the Contras." Her statement came in response to questions about a newly released CIA cable asserting that Shultz approved an unspecified South African "initiative." Mrs. Oakley said her comments were designed to clear up "any misunderstanding that may have been created'' by a New York Times report that planning for South African aid to the Contras was said to have been approved by administration officials, including Shultz. "This report is false." Mrs. Oakley said. AIDS precautions to help ATLANTA (AP) — A new set of AIDS guidelines warns health care workers to consider everyone potentially infected with the virus that causes the deadly disease. A reported 40,532 AIDS cases have occurred in the United States; so far. 23.445 patients, or 58 percent, have died. The CDC said appropriate precautions — such as gloves, masks and goggles — should be used any time "contact with blood or other body fluids of any patient is anticipated." v: Happy 16ih Anniversary PammieSue May the ne.xl 16 be happier than (he ia5!. & t Will's Fish CaMp 383-3313 NOW OPEN!!
