So I called on him to find out why he hnd quit Hollywood and why he returned. Lloyd was long one of the great names amonn movie makers, ranking with Frank Capfa, John Ford nnd William Wyler. He won Academy awards In 1929 for "The Divine Lady" and 1933 for "cavalcade." The latter and "Mutiny TONIQHT . FBI. • MT. Shown at 8:22 P.M. ih» •itruiuc PICTQM Shown at 7:00—9:43j P. M. on the Bounty" also won beat-pie- ture Oscars. But in IMS. the Glasgow-bom j director left his successful career. i Without any fanfare, he went into retirement at Carmel, Calif. I asked him why. "When I went Into the army 1 was tired," he said. "When 1 got out I was even more tired. 1 had traveled some 30,000 miles by air. That may be all right for the young privates, hut it was a drain on the old colonel. "My wife suggested that 1 quit and enjoy life for a while. 1 had always liked the country around Carmel, so 1 bought a place there, t played golf and managed my farm and we traveled a bit. But I stayed away from anything creative. People asked me why I didn't write a book about my life in the picture business. 1 had no desire to." Lloyd's idyllic life continued for five years. He kept up with movies at the local theater, but he had no desire to return to Hollywood. Two years ago, his wife was stricken with cancer. A year ago she died, and the director couldn't face a life amid memories of their happy life together.
