Alton (Sonny) Colter Elias defends title tonight in 12-rounder Manny Elias puts his state bantamweight championship on the line tonight In a 12- round bout against young Frank Rodriquez in the Trave- Lodge Theater. The bout, billed as half of a double main event, starts at 8:30 p.m. The other half features Alton (Sonny) Colter, ranked No. 2 by Ring magazine in the world featherweight class, against veteran Jerry Stevens of Las Vegas. Elias, who has not fought in Arizona in a year, has been beaten only once in his home state in his pro career. He has been a professional ten years. . Newcomer Rodriquez has won seven of 10 decisions since turning pro last year. Colter, a great favorite in Phoenix, jumped into the national rankings after a win over former world bantam and featherweight champion Fighting Harada earlier this year. He currently holds the state lightweight title. The experienced Stevens, who has 30 fights under his belt, boasts wins over Japan's Katsutomi Takano, Manny Lugo and Emil Augistin and has been decisioned by the popular and highly regarded Mando Ramos and Raul Rojas. In a six-round middleweight preliminary, Phoenicians Nick Mendez and James Lewis tangle while two heavyweight amateur bouts are also scheduled. Anthony Roza vs. Calvin Guy and Rudy Martinez vs. Manny Quiroz are set in the three- round amateur matches. Tickets are on sale at all community box offices and the TraveLodge Theater. Rangers rally; tied for first Vic Hadfield fired three goals—two of them in a frantic third period rally — that carried the New York Rangers to a 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Blues last night and propelled them into a tie with the Boston Bruins for first place in the NHL's Eastern Division. In other games, Gordie Howe also performed the hat trick—the 19th of his career- to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh; Philadelphia whipped Minnesota, 6-2; and Toronto rallied to tie Boston, 4-4.
