Frindly Indians warned thst the great river was ex- ceedigly dangerous, full of frighiul monsters who de- voure men, and heat so great it would positively causedeath. Howver, they easily navigated he Mississippi and saw no musters. The heat was bearale, but brought swarms of peky insects. The Qua- paws, 10 days from the sea, warnei them of warlike tribes and Spaniards ahead, so thi party returned to Green Bay. They covered 2,500 mits in four months.
