REED On this day in 1673, Father Jacques Marquette and the young cartographer, Louis Jolliet, sighted the Mississippi River. The French governor had commissioned Jolliet to organize an expedition to* search for the river, which they had heard about from Indians, and to look for the still-nebulous passage to China. The five-man party went up the Fox River until they reached the Miami and Mas- couten villages. Indian guides took them to the Wisconsin River. Ten days later they glimpsed the Mississippi near present-day Prairie du Chien. Friendly Indians warned that "the great river was exceedingly dangerous, full of frightful monsters who devoured men, and heat so great it would positively cause death. However, they easily navigated the Mississippi and saw no monsters. The heat was bearable, but brought swarms of pesky insects. The Qua- paws, 10 days from the sea, warned them of warlike tribes and Spaniards ahead, so the party returned to Green Bay. They covered 2,500 miles in four months.
