Leaving Khe Sanh Not American Military Setback SAIGON (AP) - The aban> donment of Khe Sanh may be a propaganda setback for the United States, but it does not reduce the American military position significantly. Khe Sanh is the first major U.S. base in Vietnam to be abandoned because of enemy pressure. During the 77-day winter siege of the base by two North Vietnamese divisions, it became a symbol of American determination to stand fast in Vietnam Top U.S. officials In Washington and Saigon said that the base would be defended at all costs. Spokesmen for the U.S Marines pushed the line "If we leave Khe Sanh, where do we stop? The South China Sea?" Hanoi can be expected to repeat the American statements on Khe Sanh to bring pressure on the Paris peace talks and to Bolster the standing of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong in Influential world capitals. One U.S. Marine officer at Khe Sanh openly criticized the American propaganda during ;he siege, saying that the vul nerability of the position to North Vietnamese siege guns in aos ended its usefulness. The new western anchor of the allied line below the demilitarized zone is at Landing Zone Stud, a supply base with an airstrip 10 miles east of Khe Sanh. This area has been in Marine hands all along, and the base could have taken over Khe Sanh's activities at any time. Operations against enemy units along the western portion of the DMZ can be launched as easily from Landing Zone Stud as from Khe Sanh. In announcing its decision to abandon Khe Sanh, the U.S. iommand cited not only a big ncrease in enemy strength and LAN HEALTH AND BEAUTY AIDS SAVE 13% TO 28% OFF OUR LOW EVERYDAY PRICES! Khe Sanh, in short, tied down too many allied troops for Its mill' tary value and was & sitting duck for North Vietnamese aiv tlllerymen. Not that life will be simple at Landing Zone Stud. The bulk of the rounds that hit Khe Sanh were rockets and mortars, and these weapons can be moved easily to new mountain positions from which they can hit the new main forward base. But shorter Marine lines of communication should bolster the U.S. position at Stud. In a conventional war, retreat on a flank would be a serious tactical matter. But in Vietnam the U.S. and South Vietnamese troops make no attempt to seal the frontier, and North Vietnamese units regularly cross along virtually the entire length of the border. One of hardest things for the U.S. Command to explain now is if Khe Sanh is unnecessary in June, why was it so vital in January when the siege began. Senior Marine officers have said that the base was surrounded before the Leathernecks realized what was afoot. Any withdrawal would have meant a fighting retreat through some of the best ambush country in Vietnam. It was reckoned that the siege would be less costly than a fighting withdrawal. STICKS AND STUDENTS — Looking something like puppets on a string are these students of Southern Illinois University's Edwardsville campus. Actually they are taking advantage of the University Center's sunken lounge and are framed by an assortment of wooden dowels hanging by string from the ceiling. The abstract art piece, called the "Plumbob," is the work of a Japanese artist, Yasuhide Kobashi. The unusual display was presented to the University in April of 1967 by Arnold Maremont, Chicago industrialist and former member of the SIU Board of Trustees. State C of C Backs Open Housing CHICAGO (Special) - The Illinois State Chamber of Commerce today announced support of fair housing legislation pending in the Illinois General Assembly. Board of Directors' action followed a favorable recommenda- tion of the State Chamber's Legislative Committee. The proposed legislation prohibits discrimination in housing by real estate broker, real estate salesman, developer or lender. Single-family dwellings are included to the intent they are included under the federal act. (The Board did criticize section 16 of H.B. 2761, which awards attorney's fees to the plaintiff and denies the same attorney's fees to the defendant, recommending this section be stricken from the bill or amended to give the same rights to defendants.)
