Gun Control Bill At Critical Stage WASHINGTON (AP) — Shift- ng public opinion, a delayed vote and President Johnson's sudden call for stricter firearms laws have brought the gun control controversy to a critical stage in Congress. A bill to ban the mail .order sale of all weapons, including ri fles and shotguns, was before the Senate Judiciary Committee today for a Vote originally scheduled $ P week ago. A majo|ity of committee members ^favored the measure then as the public outcry over Sen: Robert F. Kennedy's assas sination crested, but developments since have clouded the issue. Johnson'pushed after the assassination for the ban on rifles and shotguns, then asked Congress in the past week to also enact legislation requiring reg- stration of all guns and licens- ng of their owners. Some guh control hawks want to tack that request onto the rifle-shotgun bill. But public opinion has shifted dramatically; with congressmen now saying fheir mail is running heavily against stiffer control lay^j&rticularly those requiring' registration. • ; - As- the administration pushed its case Wednesday in a hearing before the Senate subcommittee on juvenile delinquency, the registration measure got a cool reception in •. the • House. . v» ^Chairman Epianuel Celler] D^Y., of ,the-House Ju<3^c}ary Committee, who ;has backed; enactment of mail order bans on long:guns, said tacking on registration might endanger^' the measure. *************** WHY SUFFER THROUGH HOT WEATHER?
