Art gets her students back into ciasswork The way to a child's mind is through art, Mrs. Hansa Shah, Fernwood Elementary school teacher, believes. Mrs. Shah, a native of Bombaby, India, teaches a class of some 20 "hard-to-reach" children. . Many of them were former discipline problems because standard, ac- -ademically oriented classroom activi- :ties held little interest for them . By using art mediums, Mrs. Sh h "interests her students in basic con- -cepts of math, social studies and I reading. - "Whatever we do, we can express "it in some form of art," she says. "When we are studying proportions in math and measurement, the children make graphic art designs. "Similar art projects are useful in social sttMU'es. We constructed an airport and model cars in connection with a social studies unit on transportation." __ The walls of Mrs. Shah's classroom are lined with colorful student an work--portraits of Presidents, bicentennial scenes, string art and maps of countries. "Art gives my students a sense of accomplishment and this is something they need to do well in other subjects," Mrs Shah said. "I have seen a great change in stu- dents after they have been exposed to various art forms," she said. "With daily art projects, they have something to look forward to." Mrs. Shah taught in a Bombay high school for three years and after that was an education instructor at Curat university. Her father is a high school principal at Curat, a suburb of Bombay. Mrs. Shah, who has been living in the United States for 10 years, has taught in the city's public schools for four years. This is her first year at Fernwood. Mrs. Shah's future plans include writing a book on philosophy of education. Thompson, Bilandic i to huddle on X-way ^ Gov. Thompson and Mayor Bilandic will meet at 4 p m. tomorrow to discuss their respective proposals regarding the Crosstown expressway. Bilandic hopes to get state approval for a compromise which would include; ·Construction of the Buroham Corridor, or south leg of the Crosstown from the Eisenhower expressway near Cicero southeast to Interstate highway 57 near 99th and Vincennes. ·Scrapping of tbe Crosstown north section to provide funds for construction of tbe Franklin st subway and exclusive bus lanes in tbe Stevenson expressway. Last month tbe governor said toe original Crosstowc, which included a north teg connecting tbe Eisenhower with tbe junction of the Kennedy and Edens expressways, is not acceptable to him. But be added that be was'ready to bargain with Bilandic on tbe south leg or two alternatives of Thompson's. ~. The governor's first proposal would -be to construct a seven-mile express-way along Cicero between tbe Eisen:bower and 75th st - Included are plans for bus-carpool 'lanes in tbe Stevenson with a connection to Midway airport Money saved by not building the entire south leg would instead go for the Franklin st subway, partial razing of the Loop elevated structure and road and bridge improvements. Thompson's second proposal would 'scrap the whole Crosstown project, releasing $1.5 million for other plans. They would include partial razing of tbe Loop elevated, mass transit on tbe Stevenson, construction of the SPAPFRflRCHlVE®..-.. Franklin st subway and an expressway from tbe Stevenson to Midway and the Stickney industrial area and road and bridge improvements. Meanwhile, Thompson reportedly is willing to meet with Democratic mayoral candidate Aid. Roman C. Pucin- ski who Sunday called for a halt to tbe city-state discussions. PucinsM, who will face Bilandic and four others in tbe April 19 Democratic mayoral primary, charged that Bilandic is promoting tbe Crosstown because be is "a prisoner of the cement interests" Pntinski, who favors more mass transit for the Southwest Side, argued that the mayor is incorrect in assuming that tbe expressway would lure business back to tbe area. Bflandic's latest proposal to Thompson would include abandonment of the Crosstown north leg for construction of the Franklin st subway, a few blocks west of the Ryan and north- south elevated fines. The Franklin subway would link tbe Dan Ryan rapid transit at Cermak id. with tbe Ravenswood rapid transit at Willow (1800 north). Exclusive bus lanes in the Stevenson, another Bflandic proposal to be discussed tomorrow, would cost between |l and $10 mlHkm, according to the mayor. "Early estimates ndicate tint it would cost approximately $1 million lo pave tbe inside shoulders and up to $10 mfllion for exclusive lanes in the median expressway," Bilandic said last week. Meanwhile, a Southwest Side civic leader hailed tbe impending negotiations between Thompson and Bfland- ic. "After enduring four years with a governor who completely ignored the serious traffic and economical problems on Chicago's West Side, your recent statement-gives us real hope," said Helen Mikols. Vittum Park Civic league secretary, in a letter to Thompson. "For many years, the population and industrial expansion of Chicago's Southwest suburbs has steadily increased traffic problems on Chicago's Southwest Side," said Mikols, bead of Citizens for Crosstown. t "As a result of Mayor Bilandic's ·Bumbim Plan of 1977,' tbe Southwest Side of metro Chicago is finally being recognized as tbe only Chicago area that copes with 19th century thoroughfares,'" she added. Mikols asked Thompson to grant "special considerations'' for her requests for a rapid transit line down tbe Stevenson and a Central ave. overpass. She noted that tbe Stevenson "is tbe only Chicago expressway without this vital service." The lack of any north-south through streets between Cicero and Harlem aves. in the Clearing Industrial district "causes horrendous traffic jams" on tbe two avenues, she wrote. Mikols asked that funds which would have gone for the north ieg of the Crosstown be used instead for these two projects. Excellence fund assists high school By TONY BARANEK .. In 1971, Dr. James Moore, then principal of Morgan Park High school, initiated a program called "Pursuit of Excellence Phase of the Model School Plan," which provided funds for various activities and facilities at the school Today, Moore is a district superintendent and the program has been reduced to the "Pursuit of Excellence Fund," but the basic idea of the plan hasn't varied. And according to Yvonne Griswold, chairman of the fund committee, steps have been taken in the past two years to make it one of the most successful high school organizations in the South Chicago area. Through donations and various activities, funds have been approved for nine projects since 1975, with other proposals pending consideration by the 12-person staff. "What we basically do is discuss the merits of the proposal presented to us." explained Griswold, "then pass it on to the community council for final approval" Thp "Pursuit of Excellence' committee is comprised of three students and teachers of the high school, along with three parents and community representatives, .one of which is Griswold. She was chosen chairman via an election held earlier this year by the members. Griswold said that the original intention of the committee was to establish a fund that would free teachers from one class and enable them to initiate and implement proposals for the improvement of instruction. "The purpose is basically the same," she added, "but I'd say that we've come a long way from when Dr. Moore started the program." Recent improvements at Morgan Park High school through the "committee include a Creative Writing program for freshmen, and Exchange Russian teacher for language students, advanced placement books for juniors and seniors and kilns and potters -wheels for art students Also; a Weight Machine for PE students, three Cultural assemblies for all students, bus transportation for students attending Model UN, two awards for foreign study for language students and four American Revolution films. ·"We've had a lot of «Mjperation from the community council, which has hardly ever failed to approve funding," said Griswold, "and the response from the students has been just tremendous. "They support us through benefits at icbool," she continued, "and area residents help out quite a bit with generous contributions." Money collected for the fund is placed into a kitty, according to Griswold, where it is used to appropriate the needs of the school. Since the fund's inception in 1971, monetary difficulties have been at a minimum Legislation aids Midway 'survival' By DOROTHY PETROSKEY Two bills pending in the U.S Senate would make it easier for airlines to establish low-budget, short-haul flights at Midway airport By reducing federal restrictions, the legislation would allow air earners to offer lower fares and take over markets, such as Midway, which are not being served. Currently, the federal Civil Aeronautics board does not allow air earners to undercut their competition on fare prices. However, applications from 10 air lines asking that Midway budget flights be approved are pending before the CAB. According to CAB, all the carriers serving O'Hare airport also have the option to serve Midway, but with the exception of Delta Airlines, do not exercise that choice. The pending legislation would make it much easier for other carriers to take over the Midway routes. Bill sponsors are Senators Howard W Cannon (D-Nev.) and Edward Kennedy (D-Mass) of S. 689 and James B. Pearson (R-Kans.) and Howard Baker (R-Tenn.) of S. 292. Specifically, the Kennedy-Cannon bill would allow issuance of certificates authorizing routes by a new carrier if "the applicant is fit, willing and able properly to perform such transportation." - Permission, would not be granted only if the CAB "finds that such transportation is not consistent with the public convenience and necessity." In addition, established air lines would also find it easier to begin serving new routes if the bills wer. passed. The Senate aviation subcpmittee, chaired by Cannon, will begin hearings on the Kennedy-Cannbn bill March 21. A similar bill sponsored by US., Rep Glenn Anderson (D-Calif.) is pending in the House * An aide to Southwest Side Rep'. Morgan F Murphy (D-2nd), who has been active in Midway revitalization efforts, said he would assume the Murphy would support these or similar bills. 7 "I haven't talked to him (Murphy}specifically on these bills," said aide Tom Gorey, adding, "I'm assunf' ing. he would be in favor" of such legislation. Meanwhile, President Carter Friday announced his support of CAB deregulation without endorsing any specific legislation. Carter said he favors competitive air fares with limited regulation by the CAB only ''to prevent predatory, below-cost pricing." In addition, the President said he supports the reduction of restrictions on currents routes to allow new cam* ers to establish flights Other administration support for revitalization of Midway came last month from Brock Adams, transportation secretary, when he said that while he is opposed to CAB deregulation, he favors "rite competition out of Midway." ~ ~ " Hopes for a Midway revival were dealt a blow last month when major air earners reported to the CAB their refusal to return service to the Southwest Side facility. Franzen named to Dolan post By TONY BARANEK A two-month interviewing process was concluded yesterday when Mark G. Franzen, director of school and community services for the Southwest YMCA, was appointed executive director of the Beverly Area Planning association. Announcement of his selection was made public by William VonderHeide, chairman of the BAPA's search committee, and Sue Delves, BAPA president Formal approval of his selection as executive director was finalized at a closed-door session of the BAPA council of delegates Monday night, according to Delves, who said that Franzen was chosen over 16 seriously considered applicants. "We feel that Mark has an established reputation in the Beverly Hills/Morgan Park area," said Delves, "having worked closely with various community organizations, including the BAPA." Franzen was originally associated with the BAPA back in 1972, when be joined forces with G. Phillip Dolan, who was then assuming the role of executive director. He stayed with the group, for one year, before moving on as director of operations at the Better Business bureau. Franzen assumed his post at the Southwest YMCA in 1974 "I've pretty much kept in touch witbtbe BAPA since working with them," he explained, "and a lot of my work with the YMCA was closely related. As a community resident I felt qualified enough to apply for tbe position." Franzen added that be had thought about tbe executive director's post for about a year, during the period when Dolan was considering leaving the organization "I discussed the issue with Phil now and then to see just what might happen to the position," said Franzen. Dolan resigned in a press conference held Jan. 28, to take over various community leadership roles for Montgomery Ward, Inc. At that time, the BAPA search committee was formed, with VonderHeide named acting chairman. During the interim, BAPA staff member Mary Olsson has been acting executive director, a role she will relinquish April l, when Franzen is expected to begin full-time duty Olsson will return to her regular post as a staff member. Delves cited a vast amount of community experience as one of the main reasons for Franzen's selection. "In a career sense, Mark has matured right along with the BAPA," she said. "He also knows key community people and will be able to utilize their talents well." Franzen said that in tbe time until he assumes executive director responsibilities, he'll remain with tbe Southwest YMCA and assist in finding a replacement "I'm reall pleased and am looking forward to working once again with tbe BAPA," hs added "It's going to be a challenge, of course, trying to fill Dolan's shoes "We're not going to make any ma jor moves right away," said Franzen "What I'm most interested in at tbe moment is bringing various cciamu nity groups together and filtering smoothly back into tbe organization " Crash victim services held Mass was said tins morning for a man MDed Sunday in the crash oi an airplane which had taken off from Midway airport Meanwhile, a second passenger and the pilot remained hospitalized. Mass was said for Victor Amodeo, 23, 6542 S. Archer, in St Jerome church. Internment was in St Mary's cemetery, Evergreen Park. Survivors include his widow Ireneand parents Vito and Helen Wayne Soltys, 24, of Palos Hills, pilot of the single-engine plane, remained In "very serious" condition yesterday in tbe intensive care unit of St Anthony hospital The other passenger, Thomas Kti- ssk, 24, 5401 S. New England, was in critical condition in County hospital's bum unit Shortly after takeoff from Midwaj, the planer crashed into the International Can Co, 3810 W. 38th, causing an extra-alarm fire.
