DUE tttf TCfilNSON ttfiWfl, ansas Hutchinson, September 14th to 21 st, 1918 EVERY DAY /S PA TRIOTIC DAY Great Lakes Naval Band This groat Band of 35 pieces will open the State Pair Sunday afternoon, at 2:30 in a CI rand Sacred Patriotic Concert. Many of the personnel of this Band have been with their famous director, John Philip Sousa, on his concert tours of America. They are out now under his supervision as Director of Music at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, and are directed by a musician of his selection. Sunday evening at-8:00 the same,band.will render another program. The program will be published later. Also the speaker of the day. Major- General Wood will be here unless orders prevent. This will be a most inspiring day patriotically. It is hoped that all men and women and children of all creeds and nationalities will turn out under the Stars and Stripes for this occasion. Barney Oldfield Day Monday afternoon after the horse racing Barney Oldfield will race Fred Horey for the world's championship— This will be a race of 5 mile heats, best 2 in-thrce. This track now holds the world's record, made on a half-mile dirt track in.a 5-milc race and Barney is going to go to beat it in his Golden Submarine racing car. - I - The free attractions of the State Fair will give their first performance between heats of the horse-racing this afternoon. The Great Lakes Naval Band will also give a concert. The Grand Pyrotechnic-Spectacle will give its first performance at 8:30 p. m. after the Band Concerts and the first performance of the Russian Dancers and other free attractions. The Official Band under the direc tion of Prof. Herb will give their first con' certs. " „ The G overnment Exhibition will b e in place and opportunity to visit it before the great crowds gather later in the week should not be overlooked. John Philip 8ouM. The Best Time to See the Live Stock Is When It Is Out by Classes, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Better Baby Contest The Better Baby Contest will begin-Monday forenoon at .10 o'clock. Entry Blanks may be had by calling or writing the Secretary for them. The contest will be limited to.250 Babies. Cash prizes and gold and bronze medals. . Babies from 12 months up to 60 months are eligible. Call Phone No. 383 for blanks or information, Demonstration Work The Kansas State- Agricultural College under the direction of Miss Francis E. Brown, will occupy a model kitchen in the Agricultural Building for Demonstration- al and Lecture work. This is one of the real educational features of women's wo'rkvthis year and all are invited. All these lectures are free. Agriculture Owing to the unpropitiOus season some doubt the ability of Kansas to show mncli superior agricultural produce. But the state is so diversified in its climate and soil conditions and its crops that a surprise awaits the doubter. ••. The Sugar Beet Show from Garden City will point to the unlimited possibilities of the Arkansas Valley as a sugar producer. The Great Government Exhibit and the Government Moving Pictures are FREE Speakers A large tent has been ordered and seats will be provided for the people to hear patriotic addresses during the week. Everybody is interested alike in thc»winning of the war. The way we can act in the greatest harmony and efficiency is to get on a common ground and have a common understanding. The State Fair affords an unprecedented opportunity. Watch (lie newspapers for announcement of Speakers. Speeches will be patriotic—not partisan. Food Food will win the war. We cannot have man-power without food. QThere is no abstainence wo cannot practice at homo for the benefit of the Boys on the Front, We can lessen our self-denial by each doing a little more in the way of production. The State Fail- will disclose to its "visitors many helpful practical methods which will increase our food supply and make our food supply more plentiful at home and more certain for our army.
