Treasure in small packs By NANCY HARDEKER/photos by BOB MODERSOHN To the average guy an old can may be only trash but to a dyed-in-the-wool collector it could be the Hope Diamond. Two thousand fanatics are about to descend on Des Moines. For four days — Sept, 11-14 — their empty beer cans will clatter in Veterans Memorial Auditorium as no rock band ever has. A Hell's Angels reunion? Not at all. These are beer can collectors, serious folk for whom happiness comes in small packs. Pop artist Jasper Johns, of bronzed Ballantine can fame, would love it. The event of the year is drawing near — the fifth annual Beer Can Collectors of America (BCCA) National "Canvention," a giant can and brewery items swap session. Beer can collecting, known to but a few five years ago, now has come into its own. The hobby — amassing as many cans with different labels as possible — is legitimate, right up there with coin and antique collecting, if a bit harder to display. At last count there were more than 5,000 active BCCA members in the United States, England, Japan and Sweden, including 114 lowans. Many of them don't even drink. If the frenzied fourth annual can- vention in Denver last September, attended by more than 1,000, is any indication, swapping will reach a fevered pitch here.
