(§PJ—Going to 'sleep is just a mat- i$r of mental discipline; counting sheep,'reading in bed, listening to music is all nonsense and won't Help a bll according to Miss Mar- Ifca Alden, a Purdue university graduate. » Miss Alden had no intention of becoming an expert on the matter <J|E sleeping when she was grad- i^ted from college with a home Economics degree, but she became a> sty list and consumer guide for a ^jjrm manufacturing sheets and a^ter every lecture a large per- 1942 Q1Q] centage of her audience interrogated her on the problem of sleeping. Stop Worrying, Relax Anyone who knows all about sheets should certainl: know how to get some sleep on one so Miss Aiden studied the problem and learned what causes wakefulness. The real reason some people can not sleep is because they want to lie awake and worry, Miss Alden declares. In order to sleep you have to stop worrying and relax. Lie on your back, stretch your arms, clench your fists and then let yourself go; lie on the bed face down, grasp the bed-posts and stretch, then relax, draw up your knees tightly to your chest, tense the muscles, then let your legs drop on the bed. Those, ona or aVl of them, are ths cures for insomnia in Miss Alden's school of thought. Slot Machines Beam Of Light Be Inspiration For Weapon Which Fired Prove To CAMP BOWIE, Feb. 12. (U,R) — The same nickel-Mi-lhe-slot amusement machine 'that permits, the firing of a beam of light at a moving figure—Hitler walking in a woods is popular—has been the inspiration for a valuable piec-a of army equipment. Soldiers of a tank destroyer unit at Camp Bowie have created • a target practice device empioy'.ng the photc-electrci eye to use in an indoor range. So successful has it bpen in aiding the training of gun crews that Capt. Henry W, Moursund, com- mander of the tank destroyer units, plans to send data to other such army groups. Soldiers were talking idly one day about the amusement machines when one suggested that the light beam principle would be useful in army camps for marksmanship practice. The upshot of the conversation was that one of the machines was obtained, the electric-gun device taken from it and mounted on a 37 mm. gun carriage. Bulkeye Rings Bell Twenty-five feet away the iar- Avofgncrie-Joumcl Offices get—the figure of a man walking through a woods—was set up, and gunners began their first practice in the essential art of speedily sighting a moving target. When the beam of light strikes the photo-electric cell in the target, a bell rings to show a biillseye. Speed and accuracy are factors in scoring hits on the moving target, Currently, the device is set up to provide training in traverse mivaipulalion of the gun. Master Sergeant Edward Windebank, Houston, who directed soldiers in the construction, now plans to mount the box containing the target on a small wagon with eccentric wheels so adjustment for elevation will be a factor. (U.R)—Staff Sgt. James F. Martin and his new bride had a tough time, but they never gave up. The young couple drove to Reno for the ivedd ; .ng ceremony, but arrived only after surmounting a number of obstacles. First, they lost a purse containing the wedding ring and the sergeant's pas* from the field. Next, a connecting rod burned out and delayed them. A flat tire followed. When they arrived in Reno, it was too late to obtain a license. The marriage took place the next day, with a borrowed wedding ring. • The return trip was better—only four flat tires. Groom-To-Be Excused From Duty On Jury . GREENSBORO, N. C., Feb. 12. (/PJ—A dreamy-eyed young man drawn for jury duty told Superior Court Judge Wilson Warlick that his mind was not on the subject at hand because he was to be married next day. "Excused from duty," said the judge. "And you also may need the lime to get money for necessary expenses." _QITO.IA3LEIS.5AL»£.KOSE CROPS Tired Kidneys Often Bring Sleepless Nights Doctor* say your kidntya contain 15 tollw of liny tubes or filters which help to purify tha blood and keep you healthy.
