IT, J«ly I. Itit California May Swing To Another Lew Angeles. June WV-A Denocratic anti-Truman bandwagon rolled today In California. Although the state's 54 votes in lit* Democratic national convention are pledged to th* President. State Chairman James Rooaevelt indicated a swing to another candidate "was abrewing--and stirring up plentv ol interest elsewhere. "The majority of oar delegates, I believe, do not consider themselves bouod by the pledge." said Roosevelt. "We agreed at our state meeting ia Saa Luis Obispo latt weekend to wast and see ·what the situation is in Philadelphia before acting-" ' Eisenhower Mentioned Party insiders said Gen. Dwight Eisenhower and Justice William O. Douglas were most frequently mentioned at the State parley. "My phone hss been ringing all dav with calls from ail over the country -- Michigan. Minnesota. Wisconsin, Illinois and several southern states." Roosevelt added. "Indications are that they're not unfavorable to California's viewpoint." Backing for the possible zwitch came from Alien Carter, ' Pomona delegate and counsel for the state committee. Carter indicated there is * strong battle going on among the delegation on the subject. He said at least 15 delegates shared his view that another candidate might be better--and thai perhaps 35 or 40 would make the switch. A spokesman for delegates holding firm to Truman said he believed the piedge "binding until the chief releases us." Said Attorney Henry I. Rockweiier: "It w o u l d n o t benefit the party io nominate anyone else. President Truman :s our titular leader and we must stand on his record, win or lose."
