REPUBLIC,/ : ! 1 MAIL '•' J 8UUOOQ 1*14 The Arizona Republic Phoenix, Friday, Jane 29, il?3 \ Catholic lay organization Spain's big controversy New York Tittles Service MADRID — The most controversial organization i n ...vSpain today is a powerful, r»jtoman Catholic lay group called Opus Dei, "God's Work." Critics call it "Octopus Dei," God's Octopus, or the "Holy Mafia." They say it exerts immense influence on Spanish economic, academic and political life. Further, the critics say, it is an elitist fraternity based not so much on religious vocation as on wealth, brains and even good looks. Curiously, Opus Dei is attacked vehemently from both the right and the left. Some leftist politicians and clergymen claim Opus Dei members have not used their powerful positions to oppose, reactionary tendencies of the Franco regime. The ultraright, in contrast, believes Opus Dei influence is dangerously liberal. One conservative general described the movement as "a new white masonry trying to sow rtiscord in the heart of the national institutions still in good health." "Our critics say that we are a secret organization," says Opus Dei spokesman Miguel Alvarez, a well - dressed lawyer. "But here you are talking to me about Opus Dei. "We have about 22,000 members in Spain and some 60,000 worldwide in 65 countries including the United States. "Basically, we are a secular lay organization dedicated to putting Christian principles into everyday life and work. We don't proclaim that we are members of Opus Dei in the sense that we wear badges to show that we are good Christians. But we don't hide it. '•People may think we are powerful because some of our members are bankers and government officials. True, we had three members in the last cabinet. But the critics never talk about the thousands of ordinary workers who are members." In Opus Dei, there are categories of membership ranging from the numaris who, like monks, take a vow of poverty, chastity, and obedience, to married men and women who live at home and work at ordinary jobs. Some "cooperators" are nomCatholics. Members join by invitation. Older members recruit likely prospects at institutions like the University of Navarra, which was founded by Opus Dei. Women, too, can join, although men's and women's branches of the movement are organized separately. While Opus Dei is international, it remains strongest in Spain. "In Spain we do not have political parties in the usual sense," says spokesman Alvarez. "And perhaps some of the people who would have found olitical outlets in America or England have joined our movement." Opus Dei officials insist there is a wide political spectrum among members, and that the organization is not tied to the regime. They point out the publisher of Madrid, a journal shut down by the government, is an Opus Deista. "Politically we are free to pursue our consciences." Alvarez says, "We are only brothers in matters of faith and spirituality."
