f.' • GRIN AND BEAR IT by George Lichty 'Now that the 60-day cooling off period is about over, do any of you gents remember what we were striking for?" Goreii on bridge By CHARLES H. GOREN Goren By seizing the initiative at the crucial moment, West took a decisive step that was essential to achieve an upset of South's four heart contract. South chose to treat his red suit holdings as equals and he opened the bidding with one heart. When North offered a single raise, South rebid three diamonds as a game try. Holding maximum values for his initial response, North accepted the invitation and proceeded to four hearts. West opened the ten of clubs covered by the jack, queen and king. South cashed the ace of spades and the ace of clubs and then ruffed a club in dummy. The nine of hearts was led and passed when East played the three. West was in with the king. There appeared little hope of defeating the contract unless the defense could cash some diamond tricks, so West switched to the three of diamonds. East put up the ace and continued with the queen. It is West's play at this point that determines the outcome of the deal. If West lets East hold the second diamond trick, the latter cannot prevent the dummy from regaining the lead. If, for example, East switches to a spade, South can cash two high spades — discarding diamonds from his hand — North-South East deals. vulnerable. Mendel Rivers, D- S.C., says the Soviets will surpass the United States in the number of nuclear submarines by the end of this year. Rivers said the Russians are "intent in achieving world pre-eminence as a sea power," especially in their buildup of nuclear-powered subs. Rivers told an audience at the Charleston naval base that America's defense posture is "growing dangerously worse." 0108654 + AK5 The bidding: East South West North Pass IV Pass 2V Pass 30 pass 49? If East covers with the queen, declarer plays the ace and then ruffs out his last diamond with the eight of trumps. If East does not cover the jack of hearts, dummy retains the lead and cashes the jack of spades permitting South to discard his remaining diamond. In either case the defense is limited to two diamonds and one heart trick. West decided that, unless he found his partner with only two diamonds, declarer was well on his way to victory. He therefore overtook the queen of diamonds with the king and led a third diamond. North ruffed with the jack, but East overruffed with the queen for the setting trick. MOVING? Associated Press OSLO — A Norweigian medical study says the five- day week fails to provide a relaxing weekend, and people need longer vacations. The standard vacation in Norway is four weeks, fixed by law. The new report recommends five weeks for persons reaching 40, six weeks for those of 50 and seven weeks for 60-year-old. Only industrial shift workers in Norway have a five- day week. Unions are pressing to make it universal, but the steudy says longer vacations are preferable. The study is by a medical association committee. It says the scramble to get out of town on weekend jaunts, and to get back again, tends to make a weekend as strenuous as work.- The study quotes an expert on leisure as saying: "Medically viewed, the five-day week is meaningless, even absurd. It is injurious to health." The committee chairman, Odd Bjerke, observed: "In a weekend people don't get the relaxation they need. The rush to use the leisure hours produces a stress situation like the rest of the week." Shift work d i s t u r b s the body's daily rhythm, he asserts. The study suggests that shift workers get longer vacations, regardless of age. Bjerks said the committee was aware that its proposals presented practical difficulties because production and business had to keep running. But he suggested it was easier to spread vacations over the whole year. Cheap air travel enables persons to take winter trips to the south, thus releasing them from the traditional pattern of May to September vacations. In Western Europe the five-day week is universal in Austria, the two Germanys, Sweden, Finland, Britain, Denmark, the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.
