We've got to find i a motive." "We believe the baby was taken over state lines," because the baby's parents moved here from Attleboro, five miles away, just three months ago and most of their ties are there, said Moreau.

Hendricks' lawyers said he would testify in his own defense late today or Wednesday, but they didn't know how long he would be on the stand.

Hendricks, 30, is a member of a fundamentalist religious sect called "Brethren," who designed and sold back braces. He was arrested last December after he was accused of using an ax and a butcher knife Nov. 7, 1983 to kill his wife, Susan, 30, and children: Rebekah, Grace, 7, and Benjamin, 5. The prosecution's case has turned chiefly on evidence about undigested food in the Hendricks children's stomachs, which they say shows the youngsters died before the time Hendricks told police he left home for a Wisconsin sales trip. Prosecutors also called 11 women to the stand who said they modeled braces Hendricks designed, and that he was sexually aggressive or touched their exposed breasts during modeling sessions.

The defense has focused on testimony by family members, church sect or former employees about Hendricks' good moral fiber. Hendricks attorneys also have concentrated on what they say is a lack of blood-traces, fingerprints or other hard evidence linking him to the crime scene. The four were killed while they slept in beds in the family home in a fashionable subdivision on Blooming-ton's far-east side, police and other prosecution witnesses have testified. The bloodied ax and knife were found on beds next to victims' bodies, testimony showed. Hendricks' trial, moved to Rock-ford in Winnebago County because of extensive publicity in Bloomington and surrounding McLean County, began Sept.

24 with two weeks of jury-selection. Assistant McLean County State's Attorney Brad Murphy told the jury in opening arguments that Hendricks was a religious but sexually disturbed man who "was living a dual life."
