Lear, Marion died at 3:03 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 1984, in Marion Memorial Hospital. She was born July 4, 1903, in Flat-wood, to Joseph and Mary Edwards Rachall. She married Raymond Dale Mathis.

He preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sterling First Nazarene Church. Survivors include two daughters, Majorie Hester of Marion and Billie Zemke of Carterville; one son, Joe Mathis of Marion; five grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, one grandson, Christopher Mathis, five brothers; and three sisters. Funeral services will be 2 p.m.

Sunday at the Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Safety 'Beltman' to be at University Mall In conjunction with a statewide All-American Buckle Up program May 24-31, Murphysboro's Project Buckle-Up will present an exhibit from noon to 5 p.m.

"Beltman," the children's hero who reminds young persons to buckle their seatbelts, will be at the exhibit from 2 to 4 p.m. Fund-raising banquet planned for Paul Simon A $50-a-plate fund-raising banquet for Democratic candidate Paul Simon will be held Sunday, May 20, at the Southern Illinois University-Carbondale Student Center. The keynote speech will be delivered by U.S. Senator Daniel K.

In ouye, D-Hawaii, who will co-chair the upcoming Democratic National Convention in San Francisco. Other guests will include Senator Alan Dixon, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan (recently named statewide chairman of the Simon for Senate campaign) and Illinois State Treasurer James Donnewald. 'Run for Equality' race planned in Eldorado The Equality NOW (National Organization for Women) chapter of Eldorado and the Anna Bixby Women's Center will hold a "Run for Equality" at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20.

The runners will begin at Southeastern Illinois College and run on College Drive toward Eldorado. The event is sponsored by Cindy's, The Eldorado Daily Journal and C. P. Burnett and Sons. Entry fee is $6 if postmarked before May 18, $7 the day of the race.

T-shirts will be given to the first 100 entrants and three medals and two ribbons will be awarded in each of seven age groups. Entry forms are available at any of the local sponsor's businesses or by contacting Janet Bixler, race coordinator, at 273-9596. Coello firefighters to hold spaghetti feed The Coello Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a spaghetti dinner from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the city hall.

Prices, which include dessert, coffee or tea and all the spaghetti you can eat, are $3 for adults and $2 for children under the age of 12. Sazuki Strings perform Sunday The Egyptian Suzuki Strings will perform a concert and demonstration at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Seventh day Adventist Church in Marion located on old Illinois 13. Directed by Paula Allison, the strings' selections include music ranging from classical to traditional. Admission is free and open to the public.

Earl Butz to speak for Randy Patchett Earl Butz, former-secretary of agriculture under the Ford administration, will speak at a 12:30 p.m. luncheon Monday, May 21, at the Monroe County Fair Grounds outside Waterloo. Butz's appearance will be made on behalf of Williamson County State's Attorney Randy Patchett, 22nd Congressional District candidate. Patchett said that in addition to the luncheon, Butz would be touring several farm operations. Fred Doerflein Funeral services for Fred J. Doerflein, 84, of Tilden, formerly of Du Quoin, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Neal Memorial Chapel in Du Quoin. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.

m. today at the funeral chapel. Mr. Doerflein died at 5:10 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 1984, in the Sparta Community Hospital.

He was a retired coal miner. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 5134 and the First United Pentecostal Church in Sparta. He was born Jan. 11, 1920, in Perry County, to John and Amelia Roethe Doerflein. He married Dena May Hea, who died in 1965.

He later married Ellen Sophie Blackwell, who preceded him in death July 6, 1983. Survivors include one daughter, Genevieve Ferguson of Du Quoin; a stepdaughter, Lora Isabelle Cams of Coulterville; one stepson, Robert Finley of Angleton, Texas; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. His parents and three sisters also preceded him in death. Lillian McDonald Lillian McDonald, 94, of San Diego, formerly of West Frankfort, died Thursday, May 17, 1984, in San Diego. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort.

Billie Ellen Smith Billie Ellen Smith, 73, of Route 1, West Frankfort, died Thursday, May 17, 1984, at Franklin Hospital in Benton. Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 20, 1911, in Illinois, to George and Susie Day Wyant. Her husband, H.

W. Smith, died in 1977. Survivors include one son, Jack Johnson of Thompsonville; one daughter, JoAnn Dillon of Sesser; seven grandchildren including Mike Johnson, who was raised by Mrs. Smith; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Vivian Smith of Benton, Irene Trehune of Mount Vernon and Norma Summers of Lexington, Ky. Private funeral services will be at 2 p.m.

Saturday at Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton. Burial will be in Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery at Benton. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Driving course offered for those 65, older The Jackson County Extension Service and the American Association of Retired Persons will sponsor a safe driving course for people over 55 years old and older from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Monday, May 21, and Tuesday, May 22, at the extension center in Murphysboro. The course will include basic driving rules, license renewal, overcoming effects of aging on driving skills and accident prevention. Persons completing the course are eligible for a 3-year reduction in liability auto insurance. Enrollment and more information may be had by calling the extension service at 687-1727. jBtjSffito John Hanchung Chen, 20, of Carbondale, died at 12:10 p.m.

Friday, May 11, 1984, in Queens Hospital, Honolulu, Hawaii, following a yearlong illness with leukemia. Mr. Chen was a biochemistry major at Harvard University in Cambridge, at the time of his death. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Carbondale. He was named the Individual Champion in the World Bible Quiz sponsored by the World Bible Quiz Association in 1978.

A 1981 graduate of Carbondale Community High School, he was the class valedictorian. He was a National Merit Scholar finalist and received the National Council of Teachers of English award. He also received a scholarship from the West German government to spend the summer of 1981 in Nuremberg, West Germany. He was born May 14, 1963, in Ping-tung, Taiwan, to Peter Y.S. and Sophie S.H.

Chen. He and his family became naturalized citizens in 1977." Survivors include his parents, one sister. Shelly, and a brother, Henry. He also is survived by a maternal uncle of Riverside, and maternal grandparents of Taiwan. Charles Moore Funeral services for Charles "C.A." (Charlie) Moore, 65, of Johnston City, will be at 1 p.m.

Saturday -at the Meredith Funeral Home in Marion. Military rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 1301 in Marion. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p.m.

He was a coal miner and heavy-duty equipment operator for 38' years. He was a former Democratic precinct committeeman, and a member of the Range Hall Church, Farm Bureau. Operating Engineers Local 318 in Harrisburg, United Mine Workers of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1301 in Marion and the Carterville Masonic Lodge. He was a veteran of World War II and served jn the U.S. Marines.

He was born April 8, 1919, in Williamson County, to William Robert and Ada Halstead Moore. He married Helen Groves July 5, 1963, in Marion. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Loretta Howell of Fort Wayne, and Charlotte Edmonds of Florence, three grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Kathy Williams and Janet White of Marion and Diana Satterfield of Herrin; and a brother, Raymond Moore of Marion. Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. A laborer, he was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Christian faith.

He was born Jan. 8, 1910, in Pomona, to Elmer and Floda Gregory Tripp. He married Viola Lindsey Dec. 19, 1929, in Pomona. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lois Murphy and Judy Knust, both of Murphysboro; six sons, Lloyd E.

Jr. of Murphysboro, Leonard Ray, Merle Odell and Phillip all of Pomona, Darrel Leon of Edwardsville and William A. of Pin-ckneyville; 36 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl of Murphysboro; and three sisters, Hazel Rawlings and Agnes Bas-den of Murphysboro and Bernice Jones of Granite City. He was born May 7, 1908, in Illinois, to Andrew and Ann Barnich. Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Oyston; one son, George Barnich Jr. of Chicago; two daughters, Doris Jean Mand of Lansing, 111. and Carole Ann Bernacchi of Hanover Park; seven grand children; and six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ruby and Katie Marcellie, both of Buckner and Dorothy Drabant of Homewood. He was preceded in death by a son, James Robert, and one brother, Nick.

Carbondale Ronald E. Beed of Carbondale has been arrested on a Jackson County warrant for one count of perjury and two counts of public aid fraud. Beed was taken to the Jackson County jail after failing to post bond following the arrest at 9 a.m. Thursday. He remained in jail this morning awaiting an initial court appearance.

A microscope stolen from the Southern Illinois University-Carbon-dale Zoology Department valued at $682 was recovered by SIU-C police following a citizen's report. Police said Craig Karnes of Murphysboro was mowing a mobile home lot over the weekend at 4101 E. College St. when he noticed apparent vandalism to the vacant trailer, a rental property owned by Mike Viscuso. Returning Tuesday to investigate, Karnes discovered the microscope.

Two triple beam balance scales stolen in the same incident have so far not been located. Harrisburg Harrisburg police are investigating a Thursday night break-in at Mack-ie's Pizza Parlor in the Parker Plaza. Police say the break-in occurred between 11 and 11:20 p.m. An undetermined amount of cash and checks were reported taken. Benton Everette D.

Bryant, 29, of West Frankfort and a 16-year-old juvenile from Michigan were arrested Thursday in connection with a robbery' at the Derby Service Station, West Main Benton, earlier in the week. Both men are also suspected of robberies in West Frankfort and Salem. Court Williamson County John K. Parks, 20, of Marion, entered an open plea of guilty Wednesday in Williamson County Court for unlawful delivery of 25.6 grams of Darvocet to a Southern Illinois Enforcement Group (SIEG) agent on Oct. 13, 1983.

Parks' sentencing is pending a presentence investigation by the Williamson County Probation Department. Lottery Drawn Thursday Daily Game: 9-8-8 Estimated grand prize pool for Lotto: $4.5 million. lT5 Breeze Police Century-old markers in Eldorado cemetery disturbed by vandals Three Eldorado men remain in Saline County jail today following a Saturday night incident where a total of 111 grave markers were vandalized in the Wolf Creek Cemetery in Eldorado. Kelly R. Morris, 21, Ronald L.

Col-lum, 20, and Steven R. Holding, 19, all of Eldorado, were arrested by police in connection with the incident. All the grave markers were replaced by general assistance and city work crews Tuesday. Some of the older grave markers dated back more than 100 years old. West Frankfort An undetermined amount of money was taken from the Huck's Convenience Store, 208 N.

Logan, West Frankfort, 3 a.m. Thursday. Two male subjects took the money from the cash register and then fled on foot. Authorities estimate less than $100 was taken. An investigation is continuing.

Perry County A Du Quoin man accused of an early morning joy ride in three stolen vehicles Tuesday was arrested Wednesday morning on a warrant charging him with burglary and theft over $300. David G. 20, of 749 N. Division is accused of stealing Robert L. Heape's truck from his Route 3, Du Quoin, residence early Tuesday, wrecking Heape's truck and then stealing Michael C.

Moss's car from his Route 3, Du Quoin, residence at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday. He also is accused of abandoning Moss's car at the Consolidation Coal Co. Mine No. 2 in Pinckneyville and of then taking William C.

Amsler's pickup truck. Deputies arrested Leggans after a coal miner responded to an official plea for information, and said he had given Leggans a ride from the area near Illinois 152 where Amsler's pickup had been abandoned. Information from witnesses helped connect Leggans to the thefts, deputies said. Leggans is being held in the Perry County jail on $8,000 bond pending his arraignment.
