Could it have been done at less expense? How about defoliation? Some fields need it others do not Are they applied at the right time? Yields can be reduced if they are used improverly Harvesting another important factor affects net profit Will this crop be harvested efficiently? Check to see that field loss is kept to a minimum Is the mechanical harvester properly adjusted? Have all harvesting factors that affect the quality of the lint and seed been taken into consideration? One more factor that certainly should not be overlooked is management Did all management decisions made this year take the many factors involved into consideration or were they made with too much haste and waste? Records are important It is impossible to know how much money an enterprise made or lost without adequate records The purpose of this article has been to encourage parish producers to look at their situation now and make plans for improvement next year Those who are making the better yields are already doing most or all of the things mentioned Others can profit by doing so The average yield of lint per harvested acre in Franklin Parish in 1953 was 369 pounds In 1963 it was it was approximately 600 pounds An average yield in Louisiana of 1000 pounds per acre has been predicted in another 10 years Can we make it? Another good crop of cotton has been forecast for Louisiana by the Louisiana Crop Reporting Service According to the latest report production has been estimated to be 625000 bales for an average production of lint per acre of 571 pounds Whether or not this estimate holds up will depend on weather and harvesting conditions from now until the cotton is out of the field Mr Everett Ward of Route 1 Winnsboro recently completed basci training at the Naval Training Center Great Lakes 111 The nine week training includes naval orientation history and organization seamanship ordinance and gunnery military drill first aid and survival During the training recruits receive tests- and -interviews which determine their future assignments in the Navy Upon completing the program they are assigned to service schools for technical training or to ships and stations for on the job training in a Navy rating specialty Naval training produces the power in seapower by supplying personnel to man the ships planes and shore stations of Navy FORT BLISS TEX (AHTNC) Army Pvt Robert Stephens son of Mr and Mrs John Stephens Route 1 Wisner completed advanced training as a Hercules missile fire control crewman at Fort Bliss Tex Aug 2 During the course Stephens received instruction in the operation and maintenance of Hercules missile fire control equipment The 22-year-old soldier entered the Army in March 1964 and completed basic training at Fort Polk La He was graduated from Wisner There is no better time for cotton farmers to note production changes that need to be made than such factors are evident in the field Attention to these factors now and a resolution to do something about them can help next crop Of the many factors which Influence production certainly weather is one of the most im- High School in 1960 and attended Louisiana- State University Baton Rouge SAN ANTONIO Tex Airman Joe Snuggs son of Mr and Mrs Dotson of Rt 4 Winnsboro has completed Air Force basic military training at Lackland AFB Tex Airman Snuggs is being assigned to an Air Training Command (ATC) unit at Laughlin AFB Tex for training and duty as a supply specialist His unit supports the ATC mission of training airmen and officers in the diverse skills required by the aerospace force The airman is a 1964 graduate of Crowville High School EIGHTH ARMY KOREA (AHTNC) Army Specialist Five Thomas Rainwater son of Mr and Mrs Oscar Rainwater Loop Road Delhi was assigned Aug 28 to Headquarters Eighth Army Korea Specialist Rainwater entered the Army in June 1957 and was last stationed at Fort Sam Houston Tex ITie 26-year-old soldier is a 1957 graduate of Delhi High School SAN DIEGO CALIF (FHTNC) Larry Spruill son of Mr and Mrs Johnnie Davis of Winnsboro will graduate Sept 4 from basic training at the Recruit Training portant Weather information as it affects planting and getting a stand is available and many farmers are using it While we have no direct control over weather there are some things we can do to help out during periods of drought or excessive rainfall Plowsoles or hardpans restrict the movement of water into the subsoil Removal of these by deep plowing or subsoiling not only permits better root penetration but also allows the soil to store more water for that dry period that may come Then there is the matter of excessive rain and poor drainage Land forming andor pot hole filling takes care of this Many other factors are Important Does this crop show the need for more fertilizer? Or in very fertile fields' is it extremely rank and suffering from excessive boll rot? If the latter is the case less fertilizer in these fields next year may be in order Where soil fungicides used to help control seedling diseases and was the method of application satisfactory? A treatment with a fungicide that prevents replanting is extremely good insurance Were the weed control practices used satisfactory? Many materials and methods are available that can be used to combat almost any weed problem when they are combined and used correctly Are wilts prevalent in this crop? Would a wilt resistant variety have helped? Nema-tocides are available to use on land that is badly infested with nematodes Nematodes often contribute to the severity of the wilt problem The use of the skip-row method Command Naval Training
