neverthe less always appeared calm and in command of himself He made a deliberate clear voiced presiding officer He showed that he had done his homework on budget and other problems and he ac quired a reputation as a stub born trader Reed shot to the top in pol itics fast He had served only one term in the House and one in the Senate before seeking the Senate presidency His first real test came when he chal lenged the veteran Robert Haskell of Bangor who had held that post for two terms Political observers credited Reed with winning enough sup port to put him in the post even before Haskell first time the state election would coin cide with the presidential elec tion And most signs seem to point to a continued Republi can dominance in Maine in presidential balloting But a strong Democratic can didate for governor campaign ing on state issues might do much to offset the apparent Republican edge in the forth coming campaign LOGICAL CANDIDATE On the other hand Gov John Reed who succeeded Gov Clauson today will be a logical Republican candidate And with a year in office be hind him he should be a strong campaigner The chief field of specula tion opened up by events involves
