Rhodes for the medicine Since then I have disposed of a large quantity mostly to resi dents of this city who have been invariably cured by it and to whom I can refer I am therefore sat isfied in recommending it to be all that the proprie tor represents EDWARD WHEATON It is a stubborn fact therefore that this Remedy is destined not only to relieve the human family from malarious diseases but to do an equally good work by preventing the taking of other medicines wlncn ao narm The entire absence of any makes this Remedy not more than it is as a Preventive No class of disease is so easily managed as the one under consideration it the medicine be taken in ad vance This is owing to the diseases being pro duced by one and the same cause and therefore all both residents and travelers should protect them selves by the timely use of this preventive and not wait for the poison already lurking in their veins to develops itself in a violent attack Take the Cure as a preventive and so destroy the poisou before it does harm 53r ull directions and advice as to Diet and Hab its of Life prepared by a distinguished Physician long resident in a Bilious climate now accompany each bottle It will often be found necessary to precede tins medicine by a mild cathartic or anti bilious purga tive The very best thing for general use isa mod erate dose of Castor Oil the object of which is to cleanse the stomach and free the biliary passages Remember where this is necessary or there is cos tiveness it must be taken or the operation of the an tidote will be seriously obsrtucted Only Caution In certain specified cases pour the contents ot 1 or more bottles of the Cure into shallow vessels (dining plates) and place them in sleeping rooms for the vapor rising from the medicine ana also the air wafted across or circulated over the dregs of it A after the liquid is evaporated will counteract and destroy to a degree commensurate with its ex posure the miasmata of poison contained in the apartment This mode of exhibiting the Cure should likewise be restored to when very young in fants are exposed to malarious situations The bottles in which this medicine is put up have the words ever and Ague blown in the glass and on the outside wrapper is the name of the medicine (the copy wright of which is secured) and signature of the proprietor These precautions are adopted to prevent counterfeits and imitations Therehance for its success is entirely upon its 1 actual merits wherever introduced and used These will be considered sufficient 1 Prepared ana sold Dy the Proroprietor before the election of Preaident of the United States by the House of Representatives the Hon James Buchanan then a member ot the House and af terwards for many years a Senator of the United States from Pennsylvania who had been a zealous and influential supporter of Gen Jackson in the preceding canvass and was supposed to enjoy Ins unbounded confidence called at the lodgings of the city of Washington 'Mr Ulay was at the time in the room of hia only messmate in the House hia intimate and confidential friend Letcher eince Governor of Kentucky then nlso a ineinber of the House Shortly after Mr entry into the room he introduced the subject of tho approaching Presidential election and spoke of the certainty of the election of his favorite adding that he would form the most splen did cabinet that the country had ever had Mr Letcher asked how could hcUiave dis tinguished than that of Mr Jefferson) In which were both Madison and Gallatin Whrfe would he be able to find equally eminent men 1 Mr Bu chanan replied would not go out 61 this room for a Secretary of looking at Mr Thin gentleman Mr Clay playfully remarked that he thought there was no timber there fit for a cabinet officer unless it were Buchanan himSOif Clay while he was so hotly assailed with tho charge of bargain intrigue and corruption) du ring tho administration of Mr Adams notified Mr Buchanan of his intention to publish the above occurrence but by the earnest entreaties of that gentleman hewas induced ty forbear doing We hnvc thus given as briefly and sucainetly as is convenient with a complete understanding ot the case the statements of all the principal parties to this most diabolical plot to tarnish the fair fame of Henry Clay and to fasten upon him the atro cious calumny by which ha was for a quarter of a century hotly and maliciously assailed 1 Il is a terrible record against Jamea Buchanan It shows beyond any cavil that the idea of bargain mid corruption originated in his own brain fertile with cunning inventions and that afterwards from sheer moral cowardice lie meanly and conlempti bly sought to conceal his own inintny by bringing the charge of bribery and corruption against Mr Clay and to tfdd to his outrageous conduct and to and to sink htmseltjBtill deeper in iniquity he not only refused his consent to the publication ot the private conversation between himself an Air Clny in the presence ot Mr Letcher but abjectly'en trealed them not to make known this conversation witch is the key to tho whole mystery rom the preceding letters and statements it is evident that Mr Buchanan alone originated the whole affair He deceived Gen Jackson into the belief that he was the authorized bearer of a propo sition to liirn from Mr Clay and his friends He first suggested this proposition He says hirnselt that it originated with him He went withit to the friends of Gen Jackson and to Gen Jackson him self As nn excuse or palliation tor liter insulting conduct lie invented a story of an arrangement between the friends of Adams and Clay and sug gested to the old hero of the hermitage thnt was right to fight surh intriguers with their own ueup Il UUllt til Mr 1 uln mid sanction of his own endorsement and used till his efforts to prevent any investigation and never would and never did consent that the truth should be made known Throughout the whole of this affair Mr Buc lamin was the only actor All the others were mere passive and to their credit be it said uncon scioqs i utrumrnts of his machinations It isnot pretended that any one else knew or "Ltd lien ni even suspected that there was any ar rangement between Mr Clny nml Air Adams un til Mr Buchnnnn conceived the brilliant idea of hutching Hitch an arrangement between Mr Clay and Gen Jackson rom Mr own tOBtimony in his letter of August 8 1827 it seems that soon after the conimencemen ot Congress tn Jlecetnber 1821 lie heard that Gun Jackson in tended if elected to retain Mr Adams us his Sec retary of State Mr Buchanan cun to the con: ilitsimt that this arrangement would defeat Gen Jaekson and that the best way accomplish the election would be to have Mr Clay ap pointed Seurelarv of State This idea originated in Mr Buchanan's own brain and he set himself BCditlolisly at work to bring about the arrangement hich lie proposed He first wrote to a friend in lvania and while wailing for an answer on tne 30th of December lie called upon Mr Alark ley and suggested the matter to him and insisted that Im should talk to Gen Jackson about it or get Major Eaton to do so There is discrepancy be tween the testimony of Mr Buchanan in his own behalf and that of Mr Markley but aa Mr Markley is corroborated by Gen Jackson his statement must be taken as the correct one Mr Buchanan urged Mr Markley to see Air Clay which Mr Markley failed to do A few days af terwards Mr Buchanan still bent upon carrying out his plan for bringing about a bargain and cor ruption intrigue between Gen Jackson and Mr Clay called upon Maj Eaton informed him of the startling discovery which no one else on God's earth knew anything about that an arrangement was on foot between Adams triends and Clay friends and urged Maj Eaton to see Gen Jackson and persuade him to fight such intriguers with their own weapons Maj Eaton gave this active intrigu er and discoverer of plots and cunning contriver of counter plots a cold reception and advised him to make his proposition to the Genera! himself Noth daunted by his want of success with the friends of Gen Jackson on the following cay ne sougni an interview with the General tn person in Mr account of this interview as given in fits letter of August 8 1827 he endeavors to soften down his expressions and tries to seem to deny but does not deny that he suggested to Gen Jnck 1 eon that he sought to fght such intriguers with Hair own weapons and although this unscrupulous plot A ter afterwards for fear of having the whole Laetsjn 1 tho case exposed acknowledged that he did all Uns upon his own individual responsibility and not only 1 without the authority but actually without the privitv of Mr Clay or nis triends he certainly did inake such representations to Gen Jackson as to induce him to believe thathecame as the authoriz ed aent of Mr Clay and his friends In Gen Jack answer to Air card in July 1827 he states positively that Mr Buchanan did adytse him to fight such intriguers with their own and that all the circumstances hft did not resist the impression that Air Buchanan had ap proached him on the cautiously submitted proposi tion of some authorized At at a later day when all the facts had been made known to Gen Jasckon and ho plainly saw the base treachery of Mr Buchanan just two months mid ten days be fore his death he wrote the
