IMPORTANT GROWTH MANU ACTURES The Enquibkb Sun has received an ad vance proof sheet of the annual report of new textile mill construction for the year 1892 which is similar In scope though far more comprehensive in detailed statistics than the semi annual report published in the July number of the World It will be remembered that President Harrison in his last message to Congress quoted the textile statistics of the World which is a compliment to Ha accuracy The report before us shows tbit 272 new mills em ploying some 31600 persons were added in 1892 to the number of textile mills in the country Of 73 were cotton 49 woolen 93 knitting and 21 silk mills leav ing 36 distributed among other branches In cotton Massachusetts leads with 19 now mills North Carolina follows with 16 and South Carolina stands third with 11 Illinois and Indiana boast of only one each In woolen also Massachusetts leads with 8 new rnills Maine follows with 7 and Pennsylvania wit 6 But Maine stands first and Pennsylvania second in number of hands employed Iu knitting Pennsylvania leadn with 32 mills and New York follows with 20 The most of these establishments are small and are engaged In producing scrunlras cotton hosiery As no comparative statistics are given in the general summitry which lhe Enquibkb Sun has received the data are wanting from which to determine whether 1892 was a year of exceptional growth We have only lhe World's belief that 1892 claims first rank in the annals of textile progress In the United States" It is worthy of remark that the most of the new mills are located in tbe Eastern Blates which get lhebeutfiL of high tariff as usual while the younger Blates and Territories lhe freight" The Augusta Chronicle has nearly a column editorial advocating Governor Northen for the position of Secretary of Agriculture in Mr Cabinet Among other things the Chronicle says: high character and superior quall fleations eminently fit him for the position A man of liberal culture and a farmer by profession who has devoted many years of his life to xgriculturai put suits his selec tion would be hulled with pleasure by the farmers of the South and West Governor Northen Is in lhe prime of life He has respect and con fid nee of all classes His re lection as Governor shows tlie es teem iu which ho is held in The esteemed Atlanta Journal says: One might judge from lhe entitled to the next United Slates Senalorshlp because they had it up there in a long lime What's the matter with South Georgia and Em Geor gia and West Georgia? scarcely unexpected was nevertheless a shock to his wide circle of friends and admliers It was a coinci dence worthy of note that this distin guished statesmen and jurist after giving the vigor of his young manhood and the ripe maturity of age to the service bl his adopted Slate going thence into President Cabinet afterwards transferred to the Supreme Tribunal of lhe Republic should the feebleness of ill health turn for strength and a new lease of life to the State that gave him birth and breathe his last within a few mile ot his boyhood home The old mother State which gave him birth has always been proud of her gifted son and proud of his honorable and brilliant career and she has a lender sad pride that he came back to her in death Of the long line of illustrious men which the South has given to the country few have illustrated her in ability in courage in statesmanship and patriotism more brilliantly and stainlessly than Lamar In all lhe pages of bis public record as Congressman before the war from Mississippi as an officer in tbe Con federate army as a college professor for years following that stormy period again as a Congressman then a United States Senator where he towered among the giants of that tody during a period when tbe dignity and honor of great States were represented on that floor by great men later called as one of the Cabi net council of tbe President of the United Stales and from that high office called to sit with the eminent jurists who have made the Supreme Court ot the Republic one of the highest judicial tribunals on earth In all of the record there is not a page that is not written in honor and not a page that does not bring pride to bls adopted State and to his old mother State and challenge the respect and admiration of the people of the whole country He Illustrated too in his pri vate and public walk the honored school ot Southern statesmen who have unselfish ly served in high places whose patriotism bar always been equal to the supreme test whose lofty integrity have led them safely through all the allurementsand glittering temptations that beset states men in office so that they have come out of the public service poor iu puree but with stainless record still holding tbe confidence and trust of their countrymen and adding lustre to the history of the Republic THE MEMORY OE THE CONED ERATE PRIVATE A represented by a table bearing its name shield and colors and articles received will be given to the table which may be designated by the donor It is befitting that to the dauntless chieftain and his he roic followers these two monuments be raised iu tbe Capital of lhe Confederacy the one spot which can never lose its iden tity with the cause for which they strug gled and died Money and articles smalj and large for table or restaurant for use or beauty should be addressed to "Memo rial Richmond Va All pack ages will be forwarded free by the South ern and Adams Express Companies The name and This will bs one of the greali st and most brilliant affairs ever un dertakon in lhe South for a similar noble purpose Dr Dudley Williams of Oxford Ala is a candidate for the position ot United Stales Indian Inspector under the Cleveland administration and has secured the endorsement of every high official in Alabama from the Governor down and numerous letters from other distinguished persons Dr Williams will doubtlessly be pleasantly remembered by lhe readers of the Enquirkb Sun from bls letters published In this paper during 1891 from Indian Territory where bo was then located lie was appointed Indian Agent Gy Mr Cleveland in 1884 and very effi ciently discharged ids duties He Is thor oughly familiar with the requirements of Hie position of Inspector ills appoint ment would giro THK BKMABKABLK PKHcONALS Sealk January 21 Since the snow of last Wednesday there has been a variety ot weather It rained and sleeted alternately all day Wednesday and wound up with a storm that night The raiu fri z) as it fell and next morning every thing was covered with sleet On riday this sleet was covered with heavy frost which made it glisten with a brilliancy dazzling to behold and when the sun burst on it the trees looked as if strung with brilliants It did not feel so cold and though the mercury was near freezing each day either a few degrees above or below The wind was quiet which made It seem not so cold Such a sleet has never been seen here before Tbe rays on lhe scene gave the finishing touch to a picture already beautiful As if not satisfied with tbe variety of weather tbe storm added another fea ture along abjut 6 in a heavy rain and over all tbe thunder roared and light ning flashed Such a sight we will seldom see The rain was falling several hours and must have been very heavy for it froze as it fell and when morning came it re vealed the trees bending under the heav iest load of sleet ever seen here Large oaks and cedars were weighted down Some were so broken and shattered that 'twas hard to believe that a tornado had not done the work Over the enow Was another thick must of sleet hard and tniooth Tbe cold was not intense about the freez ing point out of doors and at one time about noon the mercury rose to above that point several degrees Late Thursday afternoon the long slanting rays of the setting sun trans formed the grey landscape to a scene of fairy like beauty the trembling drops of ice on cedar and elm glowed with red blue and white fire The trees and plants looked like celestial growth bathed in pure silver glittering with tens of thousands of gems and shining with the golden radi ance of the warm glow And so still it was so mysterious in the early day when no sunbeam lighted up the of the clinging ice a picture of deso ation whlch seemed to be tbe work of some while spirit from tbe horn of the blizzard which coming softly in the dark night with one wave of its icy breath froze the rain drops they fell and the snow on the ground vanished Thursday night a pretty heavy frost formed which gave the sleet covered trees a brilliantly white appearance Remember the birds when the snow is on the ground throw some crumbs freer the window and watch them as they eat it it will repay the trouble or three days the thermometer regis tered in the neighborhood of 25 degrees The row of beautiful elms standing iu the yard of the eagan place now occu pied by Mr Ware look as if a torna do had struck them The long limbs are broken and drooping the naked stem will be about all left of one These trees have stood there for years
