1 charter unit of a Junior Engineers of America or- lanizatlon that in the near future might stretch across the nation. Both the General Electric Corporation and Michigan State Col- ege have showed sincere Interest spreading over the land the brainstorm of Howard Getting, scl- De teacher at the school here for he past 18 years. Both the organizations men- loned had written Getting telling him they had long known the need of such a series of clubs, and congratulated him on being the instigator of the movement. Getting was told, in fact, that there were some things in the by-laws and general plan that they hadn't even bought of. The idea was apparently bom ast summer when Getting, on a GE Fellowship, along with 49 other midwestern high school instructors, attended the Case Institute of Technology at Cleveland, Ohio.

Before that Getting had kicked the idea around quite a lot, believing some type of group was needed for science and, mathematics majors, along with the usual English majors of course. About 20 of the instructors studying at Case talked about It a great deal, and as soon as Getting got back to the area he set out immediately to organize a Junior Engineers unit. It has been long realized something would have to be done to spur young students on to becoming engineers, because of the tremendous shortage of them. Last year for example, there were 22,000 engineers graduated, but the total need was for 98,000. In 3953, 98,000 positions will again be opened, but it is expected there will be only about 18,000 engineering graduates.

Getting said articles regarding the Junior Engineers unit at the high school will soon appear in "Adventures Ahead," a magazine for high school children of GE workers, and in Student Life, a national supplement to high school papers.
