Company: Utah in talks for nuclear waste deal SALT LAKE CITY (AP) EnergySolutions Inc. said Friday it is in settlement talks with Utah aimed at getting the state to drop its objections to importing foreign nuclear waste for disposal in the state. The company wants to import as much as 20,000 tons of -level radioactive waste from Italy through the ports of Charleston, S.C., or New Orleans. After processing in Tennessee, about 1,600 tons would be disposed of in the desert about 70 miles west of Salt Lake City.

If approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, it would be the largest amount of radioactive waste ever imported into the country. "We believe that it is in the best interest of the state, the citizens of Utah and EnergySolutions to settle this matter and we hope the state considers this proposal," EnergySolutions spokesman Mark Walker wrote in an e- mail to The Associated Press. "Since this issue is still before the court and in settlement discussions it would be inappropriate to comment further," he wrote. The talks began after a federal judge ruled against an effort by western states to block the import of the nuclear waste. In addition, Utah is facing a $700 million budget shortfall and newly installed Gov.

Gary Herbert is trying not to raise any taxes. Herbert spokeswoman Angie Welling wrote in an e- mail to the AP that neither Herbert nor anyone on his staff directed the Utah Attorney General's Office to enter into settlement talks. "He is committed to pursuing the appeal, and doing what is in the best interest of all Utahns," she wrote. Paul Murphy, spokesman for the Utah Attorney General's Office, declined to comment. Vanessa Pierce, executive director of the nuclear waste watchdog group Healthy Environment Alliance of Firefighters remembered as murder case picks up LOS ANGELES (AP) Investigators from multiple agencies gathered at the spot Friday where a gigantic arson fire erupted in a national forest as they built a murder case that they plan to present to prosecutors.

Arson investigators have plenty of experience to draw upon as they figure out who ignited a fire that has torched more than 230-square-miles of the Angeles National Forest on the edge of Los Angeles and killed two firefighters. Most wildfires are caused by human activity, and government statistics show that people were faulted for 5,208 wildfires in Southern California in 2008, the highest number since at least 2001. Between 2006 and 2008, Southern California was the only region of the country to see a significant jump in the number of wildfires blamed on people. "We are going to find out what we can and present it to the D.A.," Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Liam Gallagher.

"We are considering it a murder investigation." Still, very few of the forest fires lead to criminal or civil cases. The U.S. Forest Service recorded nearly 400 arson wildfires since 2005, records show. Firefighters paused in their battle against the fire Friday to pay their respects to two fallen comrades whose deaths have triggered the investigation. US criticizes Israel about settlements WASHINGTON (AP) Alarmed by Israeli plans to build new housing units in settlements and dimming prospects for American peace efforts, the Obama administration on Friday put out a rare and harsh public rebuke of its main Mideast ally. The White House said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's settlement plans were "inconsistent" with commitments the Jewish state has made previously and harmful to U.S. attempts to lay the groundwork for a resumption in peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. "United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued settlement expansion and we urge that it stop," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

Utah, was angered the state would consider any type of settlement. "If Gov. Herbert signs off on this deal, plain and simple, he's a weak leader. He's unwilling to stand up to EnergySolutions in order to protect our state's rights," she said. Former Gov.

Jon Huntsman objected to bringing the waste to Utah and used a regional compact created by Congress that manages lowlevel radioactive waste for eight states to block it. In February, the company said it would offer Utah 50 percent of its net revenues from the disposal of foreign nuclear waste. Huntsman scoffed at the proposal, saying the long-term impact wouldn't be worth a temporary financial windfall. PERSONALS IN MEMORY OF AVERY JO EVANS Daddy's Little Angel Missed Everyday! The blaze was 42 percent surrounded Friday, authorities said. It has charred more than 60 homes and burned three people. Authorities blocked access to the crime scene, a charred area of scrub and trees off the side of the Angeles Crest Highway, as they analyzed incendiary material reported to be found there. Investigators will pick through clues at the scene, try to establish a likely motive for the arsonist, then predict the characteristics and traits of the unknown quences that his act set in motion," Hestrin said. "He unleashes this disaster and men died in an effort to save people from ruin or injury.

He could be liable for those deaths." Firefighters have set up a makeshift memorial for the fallen firefighters at the base camp. An American flag and a trio of firefighters' tools were flanked by photos of the firefighters smiling in uniform and surrounded by wreaths. Nearby, firefighters had scribbled messages on sheets of paper tacked to a large wooden board. "God bless you brother," one had written. "Never forgotten," wrote another..
