the living of Sheet Hants which he held until 1888 A teh neology had a great interest for him and in Surrey lie did much important work the most notable perhaps being A Catalogue of the Church Plate of He com-niencciJ the publication of the results of his researches in this direction in 4 Transactions of the Surrey Archaeological Society in 1891 and continued the work year by year until 1901 The papers were subsequently collected and published in a separate volume in 1893 This was a monumental work marked with the most painstaking care The most interesting pieces of plate are illustrated and the author went to the trouble of giving the marks iu a large number of instances Mr Cooper was also a great authority on the ancient glass works of West Surrey and from fragments of ancient glass lie collected on ant) rear the sites of old works he had a church window constructed Among other facts he discovered was that glass works were in existence in the neighbourhood as early as the thirteenth or fourteenth century and an impromptu lecture he gave on these old works at the Old Haslemere Exhibition some years ago is remembered for the intense interest with which he invested the subject He possessed a few remains of those ancient crucibles and had more than half of some of the old vessels which he unearthed The glass industry went on until Queen time when it began to languish Chiddingfold Green it is worthy of note was the site of some of these old works Mr knowledge of glassworks sites was of the most intimate character and lie could point out on the ordnance map where each one stood even indicating in some cases the fields One of the Rev discoveries was the site of a small Roman villa at Pookford near Ohiddingfold In 1883 some stones supposed to be from the foundation of a barn were being carted away for road-mending (Mr Cooper becoming aware of this examined the stones and suspecting their true origin got Mr Ralph Nevill FSA to visit the spot The results of his observations were communicated to the Society of Antiquaries and it was found that the ground plan of this villa resembled that of one discovered at Redd inert on in 1871 Mr abilities and archaeological services were recognised in 1894 when he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiauanes He was a man of a most kindly disposition ever ready to place his store of knowledge at ihe disposal of others who were following paths of study which he had made peculiarly his own He was greatly interested in the Haslemere Educational Museum and was a regular contributor towards its maintenance Last year he presented a number of valuable books to the museum library For some time past he had been engaged in writing a history of Chiddingfold a work which is much needed The funeral
