science teacher Donald Giv ens 50 was ordered held without bond Monday at his arraignment on charges of first degree murder in the shooting death of Ron Wallace 41 Givens described by school offi cials as troubled and fearful of not being rehired in the fall also was charged with aggravated arson for allegedly setting fire to the school while someone was inside Investigators allege that Givens shot Wallace after the assistant principal surprised him as he pre pared to blow up the school Sunday morning Several of the 850 students at the rural school had complained about Givens but not about anything serious said school district Superin tendent Wayne Qualls The complaints that he get along with the kids But not any real serious Qualls said Harlowe said Givens was weird But I would never have believed he would do something like Anthony Pharris a recent gradu ate also described Givens as be teaching a class and he'd just get Givens who has taught in Hick man County for 16 years may have feared he was about to lose his tenured job Qualls said But while the teacher supposed things were stacked against none of the student complaints had been brought before the school board Qualls a 38 caliber revolver His body was discovered in the hall outside the science department af ter firefighters responded to a fire call Wallace had gone to the school 40 miles southwest of Nashville Sunday morning to prepare a con ference room for afternoon bacca laureate services Apparently investigators said he walked in on Givens as the teacher was turning on propane gas taps in the science department where can dles were burning Givens was accused of setting after the shooting three separate fires that caused approximately $150000 in damage to the school library science department and au
