Macon Telegraph and News Monday May 21 1990 Briefly McKenzie receives service award State Senator Lewis McKenzie of Montezuma recently received the first Legislative Service Award given by the Association County Commissioners of Georgia In a news release dated Tuesday the ACCG cited work on the Growth Strategies law of 1989 and Comprehensive Solid Waste Manage ment Act of this year too often those in public office hear about the times they do some thing wrong but rarely hear about what they do said ACCG presi dent red DeLoach Sen Lewis II i just want to say thanks to those McKenzie friends in the General Assembly who have been understanding of the complex issues facing counties and who have supported us in the past Bud McKenzie is one of those The award was announced at the recent annual meeting in Savannah Staff reports ormer Bibb judge dies at 62 ormer Bibb County Civil Court Judge Harry Thomp son who went on to gain recognition for providing legal representation to the poor died Saturday He was 62 was a good said assistant US Attorney Bill Gifford a longtime friend of spent a good deal of his time helping the poor people in this town and he helped quite a lot of Gifford said represented all the finest aspects of the legal Thompson was born in Macon served in the Navy in World War II and graduated from the University of Georgia Law School in 1953 After serving as assistant solicitor of City Court of Macon which later became State Court of Bibb County Thompson was chosen by Gov Carl Sanders in 1964 to fill a vacancy on the Bibb County Civil Court bench Later that year Thompson was elected to the final two years of the term and in 1966 he was elected to a full four year term Thompson resigned as in 1968 however after an investigation into a shortage of county funds in Civil Court Investigators found Thompson had cashed checks totaling $1075 in the Civil Court Clerk's office When an auditor tried to deposit the checks they bounced Gifford said Thompson had a general law practice in Macon In 1988 the Macon Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers gave him the Hugh Wallace Award for his work in defending to poor Dan Maley Teen charged in slaying ATLANTA The 15year old companion of a male prostitute who confessed to killing a North Carolina engineer at an Atlanta hotel also has been charged in the slaying authorities said The girl who was arrested riday with 24 year old Henry Eugene Hodges in Shelby NC will first be taken for questioning to Nashville Tenn where she has been charged in connection with a slaying there police said She was being held in a juvenile detention center near Shelby and has indicated that she will waive extradition said Shelby Police Cmdr Dale Ledbetter Hodges of Smyrna Tenn and the girl were arrested riday near the Shelby home of the victim Michael Whisnant Hodges was returned to Atlanta and is being held at the Pre Trial Detention Center awaiting a June 2 arraignment Whisnant 32 had been handcuffed strangled with a curtain cord and stuffed under a bed in his room at the Atlanta Hiltoil authorities said The Associated Press Holders of 2 tickets to divide jackpot TALLAHASSEE la Holders of two tickets that cost $1 each and carry six numbers drawn Saturday night will divide a lorida Lotto jackpot estimated at $20 million The lucky tickets were sold in Orlando and in Miami The big winners who have six months to validate the tickets and begin collecting their winnings in 20 annual payments selected the numbers 2 3 4 11 12 47 There are 462374 other winning tickets from last game including 438266 with half the winning numbers worth $450 each 23599 with four of the six numbers worth $87 each and 509 with five of the numbers Those are worth $276050 each The Associated Press Notebook rom page 1B Medical Centers he also lobbies for the ederation of Georgia Hospitals Coliseum Medical Centers 17 indi vidual Georgia hospitals the Geor gia Dental Association Diversified Readers Associates the Georgia Professional Numismatic and Pre cious Metals Association Medex Inc Scientific Games a company that prints lottery tickets and his own firm Bob Short and Associates As a candidate for the office that regulates what all of us pay for insurance Short allowed as how he thinks hospitals make too much money So he was asked has he mentioned that to the folks at HCA? think so he replied But are they going to give any of it back? His answer seemed to be that no that very likely Berry asks for votes Berry meanwhile the star of the event made this plea to those in attendance: just drink our beer and not vote for ax makes it clear Barnes Sen Roy Barnes who is running for governor as an ronmental has had a habit lately of calling news confer ences to discuss environmental is sues So when his staff sent out a fax message announcing that hold a Thursday news conference on important they want ed to make it clear that be breaking new ground in some other area The message said time nothing to do with the environment we Candidates respecting jinx Political candidates from far and wide are paying attention to The Davisboro Barbecue Jinx You may recall the legend goes that a candidate for statewide office who fails to attend the Davisboro politi cal barbecue is doomed to failure (Of course Wyche owler broke the jinx in 1986 but never mind politicians still take it seriously) got the biggest number of candidates ever said Davisboro Mayor Kenneth McNeely According to the mayor the May 26 barbecue thus far has drawn commitments from all the Demo cratic candidates for governor some Republican gubernatorial can didates five lieutenant governor candidates and bunch for the Public Service Commission and a bunch for Insurance Barbecue is served at 11:30 am and the speechifying begins at 1 pm The event by the way is a benefit for the local volunteer fire department Howard supporters gather Local supporters of state Sen Pierre Howard one of nine Demo crats seeking the lieutenant gover office this year have scheduled a fund raiser for the candidate today Brother Stewart one of the orga nizers said the event will be held at the Walnut Creek Shooting Preserve on Stagecoach Road in Jones Coun ty from 6 to 8 pm Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served at the $25 per person outing Stewart said According to recent polls How ard son in law of Macon business man A Emmett Barnes III is running second in the crowded Democratic field The primary elec tion is scheduled for July 17 Numbers draw fire Counting people at political func tions can get a person in almost as much hot water as counting them at an anti abortion rally or instance take those folks over in Democratic gubernatorial candidate Lauren McDonald camp As far as the McDonaldites were concerned their man got a bum rap when he got mentioned in a news story about Lt Gov Zell Miller and his recent fundraiser in Swainsboro Miller a Democratic gubernatori al hopeful himself is a major obstacle in quest to reside at the mansion Two weeks ago McDonald bumped into Miller at the Swains boro airport Miller was coming in for a barbecue fundraiser McDon ald was leaving after meeting with 23 county coordinators and picking up a few bucks in Emanuel County himself A Miller supporter had infiltrated the McDonald function and described it as a poorly attended fundraiser promising the lieutenant governor that do much better at his own money raising event Miller attracted about 500 people to his barbecue He raised $12700 plus promises of more money to come After reading a news story about the event the local McDonald faith ful were nothing short of ticked off have a fundraiser in said Jerry Payne chairman of Bibb Coun ty campaign was there for a meeting with his county coordina why there more people attending the McDonald function said Payne who also ques tioned the accuracy of the number of people attending barbe cue and the amount of money that was raised Golly McDonald camp folks We mean to upset you But since counting campaign income you can add another $3200 to already bulging coffers About the same time that McDon ald was meeting with his 23 coordi nators at his non fundraising fundraiser in Swainsboro Miller was having a $100 per plate steak lun cheon in Thomaston There were 32 cash paying steak buying patrons at the luncheon Gulliver raises questions So Hal Gulliver supporting for lieutenant governor anyway? Gulliver former editor of The Atlanta Constitution is a partner in the Towery Thompson Gulliver and Bunch law firm in Atlanta also the press spokesman for Matt Towery a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor Matt Towery is the Towery of law firm and Gulliver points with pride at the Towery bumper sticker on his car But last Monday evening at Ma Tavern in Atlanta Gulliver was listed as a co host at George kickoff campaign for lieu tenant governor Berry who re signed his position as director of the Department of Industry and Trade to run for the office is a Democrat So there in the middle of Manuel's Tavern stood a beer sipping Gulli ver glad handing the people and welcoming them to cam paign kickoff really for Matt Gulliver said known George Berry for a number of years my friend and I agreed to help with Besides Gulliver said the two candidates are running in different primaries Come July 17 a body vote but in one of them he said Which one will it be for Gulliver? He saying But probably vote for Towery or Berry depending on whether he gets a Democratic or Republican ballot Towery talks of terms Speaking of Towery the 30 year old Republican said if elected he might take the initiative to restrict a time in the various statewide offices to one term At present most statewide offices including governor and lieutenant governor are for four years But the governor serve more than two consecutive four year terms There a restriction on the lieutenant governor however and the current lieutenant governor Zell Miller has been lieutenant governor since January 1975 the lon gest anyone has held the position in the history not a lame duck if every body is restricted to one Towery said I prefer to have four years? Yes Do I want to serve eight years? to the business world after performing their governmental service If they wanted to get back into politics later they could for one he said I want to be the only lame duck when everybody else is running on both Broun visits Macon Also Thursday Paul Broun Jr swung through Macon to push his candidacy for the 3rd District Con gressional seat The 44 year old Broun a Republi can is a political newcomer trying to unseat veteran US Rep Richard Ray a Democrat from Perry The third district covers 17 counties between Warner Robins and Columbus Ray has held the seat since January 1983 Neither candidate has opposition in the July 17 primary election face each other in the Nov 6 general election Broun son of veteran state Sen Paul Broun a Democrat from Ath ens is a medical doctor who spe cializes in family practice and addictive medicine in Americus been practicing medicine in Americus for 14 years Broun said not going to be a Broun said going to be a doctor in Congress work for the health of the people of the district Economic health environ mental health and physical Cunningham blasts Demos Another Republican congressional candidate Robert Cun ningham of Macon was the guest ol honor at a meeting of the Washing ton County Republican Party ri day Cunningham a former chairman of the Bibb County Republican Par ty is trying to unseat US Rep Roy Rowland a Dublin Democrat in the 8th District congressional race Neither of these candidates has opposition in the July primary election The sprawling 8th District covers a 30 county area from Monticello to the lorida line During his talk to the Washington County Republicans Cunningham continued his verbal assault on what he calls the con trolled and its irrational spending habits President spend one dime without Congressional approv he said Democrats have controlled the US House since 1953 In those 37 years we have had a balanced budget only one year and a few near misses is not rosy as the American people are being led to believe We must elect fiscal conservatives willing to make the difficult votes to save the future of this he said Cunningham is scheduled to ad dress a political rally in Davisboro at 1:30 pm Saturday opens offices Albert a Democrat seeking the state District 14 senato rial seat has opened a campaign headquarters on South Camelia Bou levard in ort Valley District 14 runs from ort Valley to Americus O'Bryant a former college profes sor and small business developer who owns and operates Community Plaza in ort Valley told the people at the opening ceremonies that state and local governments must work together to provide the neces sary governmental services at the most economical cost "As we approach the 21st century elected leadership must work and develop creative and cooperative strategies for solving community said O'Bryant will face state Rep George Hooks of Americus in the July 17 Democratic primary elec tion Hooks is giving up the House District 116 seat to try for the senate Her work has earned her a national reputation She has ap peared on the Rivers and and in People maga zine She appeared in court May 8 for a preliminary hearing on the Cobb County charges which are expected to go before a grand jury this summer The case involves a lorida wom an who said she asked Yager for protection because her husband physically abused her and their 8 year old daughter and a 10 year old son Yager was charged with kidnapping the boy and subjecting him to cruel verbal treatment A kidnapping charge involving the girl was reduced to interfering with the custody of a child during a hearing May 8 Police contend Yager threatened to send the children back to their father who she said would beat them if they refused to make charges of sexual abuse and Satan ism against him Cobb District Attorney Tom Char ron described Yager as a woman with good intentions who has be come obsessed the courts awarded custody of her own daughter Michelle to the father Roger Lee Jones even though Yager claimed he had sexually abused the child She launched her underground crusade in 1987 the year after Jones was indicted on nine counts of child molestation involving three minors in Venice la He still is awaiting trial on the charges She married her third husband an Atlanta physician after her second husband committed suicide Her work with the underground she said has sometimes strained her 15 year marriage to Howard Yager to the point of no But she said memories of what happened to her daughter who now lives with the Yagers keep her bent on helping other abused children critics say she is a media princess who is carried away with publicity Denise Gooch one of the founders of a national group called the Mothers Alliance for the Rights of Children which Yager also helped to start described her as a dream and a Yager was asked to leave shortly after it started over philosophical differences and began her own network the same year said anoth er founder Sarah King Authorities have criticized Ya interview techniques charging that she intimidates children and often introduces the subject of Sa tanism Yager who has children sit in a high backed Renaissance chair during an interview at her home in an affluent Sandy Springs neighborhood in suburban Atlanta obsessed with a legal system a system designed to protect that destroys obsessed with this cult business whisper she talks of girls who are used as Satanic to carry fetuses that their tormentors later sacrifice At times she stops to introduce a grandmother who works with the network or to chat with an abused teen ager She said the youth is one of the changing number of house guests that varies with her caseload The daughter of a coal miner Yager has a distinctive West Virgin ia twang and the memories of growing up poor She refuses to own jeans typically dressing in heels stylish dresses and expensive jewel ry even at home I go out in the garden I wear a beautiful dress and a garden she said The Cobb case she vows will never go to trial She contends the police and BI agents assisting in the case are harassing her family and trying to destroy her credibility especially among law
