A history of Upper Iowa University Upper Iowa University, Fayette, Iowa, is a co-educational, nonsectarian liberal arts college in its 106th year of service to the mid-west The University is located on the banks of the Volga River in the rich agricultural and beautifully wooded area of Northeastern Iowa on highways 150 and 93. It is 51 miles northeast of Waterloo, 92 miles southeast of Mason City and 75 miles north of Cedar Rapids. Upper Iowa was founded in 1857 for the purpose of providing a college educational opportunity for the youth of the area. Colonel Robert Alexander and Mr. Samuel Robertson visualized such a school and in 1854 made the initial grant which versity possible. the upper 50% of their high school graduating class and shall not have less than a "C" average (2.00). The Fayette Seminary opened January 7, 1857. On July 15, 1858, the first annual Commencement was held and the Board of Trustees changed the name to Upper Iowa University. Although originally affiliated with the Methodist Church, Upper Iowa University separated herself from this support and became an independent inter-denominational institution in 1928. The University has grown consistently since 1952. Enrollment continues to increase. In the fall semester of I960, the student body numbered 646 with an additional 479 enrolled in off-campus extension classes. New constructions are being added yearly to the physical plant Projects for the immediate future include the new Baker-Hebron Science Hall, the new Dorman Gymnasium and the remodeling of two existing buildings. Upper Iowa University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities and the American Association of University Women It is fully approved by the Department of Public Instruction of the State of Iowa and is a member of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. It is also affiliated with the Association of American Colleges, Liberal Arts College Workshop of the North Central Association, Iowa College Foundation, National Institutional Teacher Placement Bureau and the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It has a teaching faculty and staff of over 50 with a low faculty-student ratio. Thus each faculty members gets to know personally each student in his or her class. Through intimate classroom and committee associations, a sense of belonging develops throughout the entire University ACADEMIC OFFERINGS The liberal arts emphasis in the program at Upper Iowa calls for a broad acquaintance in the fields of basic learning. This enables the student to understand the structure of the natural and physical world, the general and specific ideals of the American way of life, the perspectives of man's past, anc the future in science and the fine arts. Majors are available in the biological science business administration, chemistry, elementary education. English, history, mathematics, music, physical education including coaching, physics, political science, speech and sociology. Minors are available in the major fields along with art, economics, French, German, Spanish, psychology, accounting, philosophy and religion. Pre-professional courses are offered in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, forestry, law and engineering.
