DEATH NOTICES LeRoy Timblin Cynthia Hogan Bryant 42 Lovell Staples Jr 72 IT A RIES Polly A Hughes 57 Portland Press I lerald Monday January 24 2000 5B Navy veteran loved outdoors Le Roy Timblin Station evasion and resistance instructor His brother was in Vietnam the same time he was and so were several cousins They served in different parts of the country but met as often as they could for reunions said it would have been a nice place to be stationed if it for the his wife Shirley Timblin said Sunday The two met in Brunswick when Mr Timblin was stationed at the Brunswick Naval Air TOPSHAM Ore Timblin a family man and Navy veteran who served two tours in Vietnam died Sat urday He was 57 Mr Timblin spent 24 years in the Navy retiring as a senior chief While in the service he served as a survival SSI was walking down the road and I saw his wife recalled kind of picked him They fell in love and married in 1963 They were stationed in Pennsylvania and in Okinawa Japan where Mr Timblin was a Boy Scout leader He had an international scout his wife said 1 he only American boy in the troop was our When he returned to the United States he also was a troop leader in Topsham Mr Timblin was a first rate outdoorsman who loved camping fishing and hunting His beagle reckles was a frequent hunting companion During hunting season Mr Timblin operated a deercutting business called Gingers The busi ness used to belong to Mrs father PASSAGES Each day the newspaper selects one obituary and seeks to learn more about the life of a person who hits lived and worked in Maine We look for a person who has made a mark on the community or the family and circle of friends in lasting ways When he retired he of WINDHAM Cynthia Hogan Bryant 42 of Cottage Road died riday at Maine Medical Center in Portland She was bom in Biddeford a daughter of Thomas and Mildred Hunter Bryant Sr and attended Biddeford schools She was in the junior choir at Hie irst Parish Congre gational Church in Saco a member of the Drum and ife Corp at Biddeford Junior High a member and captain of the cheerleaders at Biddeford Junior High and a member of the Girls Scouts at Biddeford Pool While at Biddeford High School she was a member of the swim team bowling league and the Ski Club She graduated in 1975 After high school she completed Mans field Beauty Academy and was a hairdresser at Shear Design and at Charisma in Biddeford and for Stevens in Saco' i She backpacked across Europe upon completing Mans field Academy Ms Bryant was most recently employed by Central Maine Power in Portland She was the fiancee of Keith Berry of Windham Surviving are her stepfather and mother Kenneth and Mildred Pasty Allen Hunter of Biddeford a son Bryant Hogan of Windham a brother Thomas Bryant Jr of Lyman and a grandmother Arlene Bryant of Saco Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 pm today at Dennett Craig and Pate uneral Home Saco A funeral will be held 1 1 a Tuesday at the funeral home with tire Rev Peter Mercier of the irst Parish Congregational Church officiating Bertha Smith 97 BUXTON Bertha Smith 97 of Long Plains Road died Sunday at a Sanford hospital She was bom here one of 14 children of Andrew and Mary A Martin Smith and attended Buxton schools Ms Smith was a homemaker and for several years she was a domestic for local families She was also a secre tary for Cemetery Association for many years Her interests included flower gardening houseplants knitting crocheting and reading Surviving are one son Murray Smith of Buxton and several nieces and nephews Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 pm Tuesday at Dolby and Dorr uneral Chapel 76 State St Gorham where a funeral will be held at 11 a Wednesday with the Rev Donald Smith officiating Spring burial will be in landers Cemetery fared it to each of his chil dren and Mr Timblin took him up on the offer He enjoyed it and particularly enjoyed talking to other hunters Mr Timblin also loved traveling and often drove with his wife in their recreational vehicle He was bom in Kersey Pa the son of Lloyd and reda Mae Reed Timblin He graduated from St Marys High School in St Marys Pa Mr Timblin was post commander of the Nelson Conley American Legion Post 66 of Lisbon alls 40 8 and Chef de Gape of Voiture 354 of Androscoggin County He also was a life member of the Veterans of oreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans and a mem ber of the leet Reserve Association and the Slovak Cath olic Association of Lisbon alls just an all American his wife said did everything for Surviving besides his wife of Topsham and his mother of Kersey Pa are two sons Jonathan of San Antonio Texas and Daniel of Harpswell a brother John Timblin of Kersey Pa two grandchildren a stepgrand son and many nieces nephews cousins aunts and uncles A memorial service will be held at 7 pm Wednesday at uneral Home 12 ederal St Brunswick with the Nelson Conley American Legion Post 66 and the 40 8 Janalyn Mae Lancaster 61 GRAY Janalyn Mae Lancaster 61 died Saturday She was business manager of Gray Garage for 23 years and Editor of Appalachian Mountain Club Newsletter Maine Chapter for many years In addition she was chair man of Gray Library Committee and Maine Narrow Gauge Rail Road accounting manager Her interests included hiking camping nature the Au dubon society and traveling to the West especially Colo rado and British Columbia Mrs Lancaster graduated from Pennell Institute in 1956 Surviving are her husband of 15 years Emmons Inn caster of Gray a stepson Walter Inncaster of Center Conway NH two stepdaughters Nancy Martin of Suf field Conn and Barbara A Lancaster of Cranston RI a sister Patricia Whitten of Standish and four grandchildren A funeral will be held 2:30 pm Wednesday at Wilson uneral Home 24 Shaker Road Burial will be in Dow Cemetery iq the spring The Rev Lawrence Gilbert will officiate Arthur Sager 95 BATH Lovell Staples Jr 72 of North Street died riday in Bath He was bom here a son of Lovell and Pauline Roderick Staples Sr and attended local schools and Mor se High School Mr Staples entered the Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific On April 30 1960 he married the former Martha Wilson He worked at Bath Iron Works for 39 years as a straightener He was a member of the Bath Lodge of Elks and the American Rifle Association He was a hunter and fisherman and a licensed Maine Guide for many people including Peter Garland former congressman His wife died on Dec 29 1998 and a daughter Judy Staples also died previously Surviving are two sons James Staples of Texas and William Wilson of Woolwich two daughters Linda Hasten of San Diego and Mary Staples of Texas a broth er orest of Bath 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren A graveside service will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery in the spring Arrangements are by Mayo Curtis and Hill uneral Home 819 High St AUGUSTA Polly A Hughes 57 of Winthrop Street died Saturday at her home She was bom in Evansville Ind a daughter of Ole and Marjorie Chandler Olsen Mrs Hughes was a Polly Hughes graduate of the University of Ten nessee and Emery Law School in Georgia She was employed as a real es tate attorney by the State of Maine for 13 years Surviving are her husband of 15 years Jimmy Hughes of Augusta three sons Morgan Blanton of Portland Doug Blanton of Villa Grove Ill and Christopher A Blanton of New Jersey a stepson relan Hughes of Brea Cahf three step daughters Dawn Rae Lynn Hughes and Dianna Elaine Hugh es both of Augusta and Dayna Hughes two grandchil dren and several step Sun day at Memorial Hospital in Norway following a brief illness Bom in Boothbay he was a son of Charles and Violet A Thurston Bumham He attended Boothbay and East Hootnbay schools He graduated from Gould Academy in 1929 and Sherman's Business School in 1931 After learning the meat cutting trade he worked at the irst Na tional Store in Rumford He worked as head clerk in woods op erations and woods superinten dent at the Camden Shipbuilding Corp locating oak logs for ships He was also woods superinten dent for Andover Wood Products Inc for 14 years After working for PH Chadboume and Co survey ing and cruising land he retired in 1976 as a self employed surveyor He married Maijorie Lois Thurston on Oct 30 1934 in Gilead Mr Bumham was a life member of Oxford Bear Lodge Knights of Pythias and a former member of the Bear River Grange He enjoyed nature the outdoors bird carv ing painting writing and reciting poetry and telling stories As a resident of Hanover for 54 years he participated in many community affairs including serving as chairman of the Northern Oxford Vocational Area board of direc tors He also served as Boy Scout Master and took the troops to the air in Canada Surviving are his wife of 65 years Maijorie Bumham of Hanover four sons Charles Bumham Jr of North Rumford David of Scarborough Guy of Bethel and Melvin of Skowhegan 12 grandchildren and 20 radio operator His wife Evelyn Allen Valliere died in 1 994 Surviving are a daughter Anne Valliere of Clifton Park NY a son Paul A of East Providence RI a sister Helen eehan of Arlington Mass and two bom in Augusta a daughter of Elmer and Bonnie Berube Bangs Jr attended Randolph schools and graduated from Gardiner Area High School in 1975 She worked for Health Tex in Gardiner and later worked at a nursing home in Gardiner On July 30 1977 she married Carroll Lincoln and they lived in Gardiner for a brief time before moving here Mrs Lincoln was a member of SL Catholic Church Gardiner She spent free time with her family shopping and with hertwodogs Surviving are her husband of Whitefield a son Travis Lincoln of Whitefield a daughter Shannon Lincoln of Whitefield her parents Richard and roding and attended Portland schools Mr roding worked for Loring Short and Harmon for 10 years and he also worked for Westbrook armers Union and the South Portland Shipyard during World WarH or most of his life he was a self employed finished carpenter retiring in 1976 Mr roding was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served as a deacon and he was also a mem ber of SL Ansgar Lutheran Church in Portland He served on the Merger Committee and the Building Committee He was past chancellor commander of Ivanhoe Lodge of Knights His wife Laura Ross roding died in 1996 Surviving are one daughter Mrs Rodney (Jane LJ Harrington of Chebeague Island one son Alan of Hol lis one sister Esther Jensen of Gorham five grandchil dren and five great grandchildren There will be no visiting hours Memorial la He was an Army Veteran of World War II having re ceived the Bronze Star and Purple Heart He later joined the National Guard and retired as command sergeant major after 22 years He was a charter member of The Maine Association of Retirees lifetime member of the Disabled American Vet erans and member of the American Legion His favorite pastime was building radio controlled airplanes His wife
