oo Horseman Traveling Ozark rontier Trail Stopg Here Marshal Ralph Hooker of Carthage Mo has been a much dis cussed and according to him man lately The marshal has been a topic of conversation in the many towns he is passing through on his 2500 mile horseback jaunt over the recently established Ozark rontier Trail Marshal Hooker is actually blaz ing the trail which covers four States Missouri Arkansas Okla homa and Kansas Sponsored by the Smith Brothers Manufacturing Co (makers of Buckeroo western wear) who have a plant at Carthage he remarked that he has taken a lot of abuse on this trip Motorists call him names throw tmngs at him and he has become the center of cat calls as they pass By Marshal own words cowboys never had to face these kind of hardships Some of those automobile drivers today are more dangerous than the he said The 60 year old horseman is no greenhorn on the trail by any means In 1958 Hooker walked the Santa Trail and he rode the old Chisholm Trail on horseback in 1959 In 1962 he walked Daniel Wilderness Road through Virginia and Kentucky He started his present trip on May 22 from Carthage He aver ages around 30 miles a day and riding seven days a week Hooker has been roughing it sleeping along side the highways where his horse can find plenty of grass His horse a 15 year old chestnut mare is named Penny It was on Penny that Marshal Hooker has ridden through such famous western towns of El Reno Lawton and Tulsa Oklahoma Wichita Dodge City Abilene and Atchison Kansas rom Carthage he rode into Arkansas Then he and Penny went through Oklahoma on to Kansas rom Kansas where he says the people have been the friendliest of all he rode into1 Missouri He passed through New Haven last week Wednesday riding into ranklin county from Jefferson City Up to that time he had covered about 2000 miles of the 2558 mile trip mapped out by the governors of the four states in which the Ozark rontier Trail passes through Marshal Hooker travels light eat ing in restaurants Occasionally some farmer invites him in for din ner and at times even to stay overnight Hooker expects to arrive back in Carthage in about three weeks where his wife and daughter who is also married make their home Hooker is actually a marshal He carries that title of Dodge City the town made famous by Wyatt Earp He is a deputy sheriff of Stone county and several Kansas Sullivan mayor George Hays and will now represent the Democratic ticket in the general election He will face Republican Reinhard Schroeder who carried the GOP nomination in the pri mary In the much talked about race for Republican treasurer nominee in cumbent Benny Overschmidt won the Republican nomination over Jul Meyer Locally 189 ballots were cast There were 106 voters from ward one and 83 from ward two In the one Democrats here favored Mel Carnahan 29 25 It was a 13 13 draw in ward one Al Buhr received 26 of the 51 who voted for first district judge The rest were spread among the other five candidates On the Republican side locally Schroeder carried New Haven by a 107 26 count about 4 to 1 over Rosenkoetter in the Congressman race George (Shorty) Pinnell fin ished here with 52 votes for first district judge ahead of winner Rud Msh Schulze (49) and Paul (Pic) 2586 Martin (27) Benny Overschmidt easily carried New Haven 85 to 38 over Jul Meyer In the state representative races Cap 1 blue champion female was a Hampshire (See Page 8) Council Accepts City Attorney Resignation The city council accepted the re signation of Raymond Davis as city attorney at its regular meeting Monday night Mayor Joy Schaffner read the letter of resignation and the coun cil acted swiftly and asked Mayor Joy Schaffner to contact Donald Althauser attorney at law from the firm of Puchta and Althauser to see if he would be interested in becoming the new city attorney Presently Mr Althauser is serv ing in the community on a part time basis He and Randolph Puchta are law partners at Hermann however they also serve the Owensville area on a part time basis Herbert Meyer approached the Receipts totaled $16829603 near amounted to $16829603 With ly $24000 more than the fiscal tuitions and revenue receipts were for the suin The school district began the mer remedial school 1965 66 fiscal year with an operat Gross expenditures for the past American Legion Post 366 Shows Greatest Administration costs took a jump this year Holding the $7500 line for two years consecutively ($7502 in 1963 64 and $7596 in 1964 65) expenditures in this category in creased to $10817 Instruction in the school district also increased The 1965 66 figure reached $8585714 an increase of $472651 over the 1964 65 fiscal year The increase over the 1963 64 fiscal year was $1054583 ood services ran between the $10 11000 mark in the previous two years but this past year this ex penditure ran over $15000 The school district retired $6000 in bonds this past year but still has $161000 in outstanding bonds Total assessed valuation of the district as of last December was a record $1910840 an increase of $35540 over last year The valua tion will go up again next year due to the recent annexations of city board offering a complaint about the odor from the burning at the city dump The council advised Mr Meyer that the board would make a study of the problem and see if it could be corrected A motion was also passed order ing the city clerk to notify Scenic Regional Library that a charge of $35 per month for rent of the city library building will become effec tive August 1 TO MEET TONIGHT The New Haven Chamber of Commerce will hold their regular monthly dinner meeting at Dairy Maid Restaurant beginning at 6:30 tonight (Thursday) New Haven Post 366 had an in crease of 9228 percent in mem berships since the time it was or ganized in 1933 According to information releas ed in the state organ of the Ameri can Legion the Missouri Legion naire New Haven had 17 members in its post in 1933 The 1966 membership totals 220 Dan Kappelmann an original member of the local post submitted this information relative to the organizing of the New Haven unit signed the charter and had our initial meeting in the Muench blacksmith shop on Olive street ifteen members were required to be chartered and that's how many we signed up" The 1933 charter contains those Alpheius Goodrich Alfred A Abbot Charles Rodgers Paul Helm and rederick rei Later during the year two more members joined the post Dan Kappelmann says that the post was originally chartered around 1922 but apparently one of the 15 members the number required to keep a pay his dues one year probably 1932 and the local charter was revoked After signing the charter in the blacksmith shop the post met in a wash house of one of the local residents from time to time Some of the activities the post engaged in for making money were bringing in tent shows and holding ice cream socials adjoining land The tax levy for the three past years has been $365 per $100 assessed valuation Broken down into funds for the past fiscal year the levy looked like this: Teachers fund $150 Incidental fund $124 Building fund $76 Debt Service fund $15 The amount of the levy allocated for the teachers fund dropped from $166 from last year but the inci dental fund allocation increased by 9 cents over last $115 The building fund jumped from 15 cents to 76 cents Value of the school site equip ment and buildings for this year was placed at $325000 up $25000 from last year and almost double of the $167000 of 196384.
