Macon atlcarapbNcms Page 1 riday October 28 1983 Section Sports The chase is on again ASSOCIATED PRESS Auburn quarterback Randy Campbell (14) claims lorida 'was the dirtiest team we played last year Dooley: Temple is tough (See TECH page 3C) Expert mixes science and athletics Sports AM On the Air Arnot Need a score? ARNOT ESTABLISHED the Lake Placid Sports Medi AS COULD BE expected Harrison has made his share of rookie mistakes been WILL have to be mature enough to avoid all of the many things that are going to A couple of plays later on another play where Campbell was obviously just a spectator his bell was rung again Hard Part of the strategy of whistles and things like that I even know it was happening because I was downfield and Randy never said anything But after we watched the films all of us were fired up do they want to take Randy out of the game? We expect them to do Harrison: Andy Cook Atiiitanf Sporti Editor 744 4122 Ed Grltamore Sports Editor 744 4335 week The Auburn players have been treated to replays and they been happy with what they have fired us said tight end Ed West was unfair hitting after the KNOW WE will be looking at some scores of other teams Saturday but I think going to have to try to get a good bit of momentum ourselves" a good week to tune up to get everything clicking just right so when we go down to lorida everything will be said (See GEORGIA page 3C) If you need a high school college or pro football score this weekend be sure to call our Scoreline phone number 7444314 This line will be Open tonight from 9 pm until mid night Saturday from 4 pm until midnight and Sunday fi otn 3 to 8 pm Scores will not be given out over the regular sports lines have been thrown but it They have rules expect lorida to do the same thing up here because this is a big game and they could be penali zied But it bother me The just hurting his own team He could be chasing the ball Campbell said he trying to make a big deal out of the play He grumble last year and he leaves the impression that if he is to be dumped on his head this year OK too a big he said (Pat Dye) made a big deal out of it Monday to fire us up But I wish we weren't even talking Dye talk about it kids look at it on he said have more to say about it than I The conversations begin Saturday at 2:30 pm Wb its opponents TO SOME degree this is a compli ment because aggressive defenses often have fingers pointed at them ora defense intimidation can win half the battle Playing the 'bowl If you have any doubts that we are getting close to the day when teams will be selected for the various' post season bowl games you need only visit the press box of any school with two or fewer defeats As an example something like 10 bowls were represented this past Saturday when Georgia played Kentucky in Athens And it was that way all around the country The bowl picture of course is thoroughly muddled at this time But we will begin to get a clearer view this Saturday with such games as lorida Auburn at Auburn Michigan Illinois at Illinois Washington UCLA at UCLA Penn State Boston College at Boston College Miami West Virgnia at Miami Maryland North Carolina at Maryland and Texas Texas Tech at Texas or several years now the bowl most often in the seat has been the Sugar thanks to its tie in with the Southeastern Conference That though will change this time unless Nebraska and Texas go down to unexpected defeat THAT LEAVES TECH with two freshmen a sophomore and senior strong safety Jack Westbrook as the starting secondary And they are backed up by two more sophomores and another freshman Not an ideal situation and potentially disastrous considering the Jackets play Duke in Durham NC Saturday so bad about having to face Duke 0 7 and already looking to next year? Ben Bennett Jle is scary about play ing Duke He is the 6 2 195 pound senior quar terback that has passed for 1877 yards and 11 touchdowns this year He is the guy who is averaging 274 completions a game (third in the nation) He is the one who picked Tech apart last year by completing 11 of 20 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns in a 38 21 victory the secondary against him is like Russian said defensive coor dinator Rick Lantz And out there twirling the cylinder will be freshman free safety Anthony Harrison He insists he worried do any good to worry you've got to go out there and try to stop him any way" he said Harley Bowers: Chuck Thompson Macon Telegraph and News ATLANTA Anthony Harrison sat at the table staring at his hands pondering the ques tion He looked up brightened the room with a carefree devilish smile then shook his head as if to ward off a frown that threatened to steal his face easy but I'm getting better as the season goes on getting lhe question that Drought on a smile and a frown almost simultaneously was: it like being a freshman start ing at defensive back for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets? His answer at all surprising After all Tech has played the likes of Ala bama North Carolina Auburn and Tennessee this Harrison season And still ahead are Duke and Georgia certainly not a schedule you'd like to break a rookie in against But the Tech coaches have had little choice Already inexperienced and low on depth in the defensive backfield they saw starting comer back Paul Menegazzi a junior go down before the season started He was replaced by a fresh man Reginald Rutland Then in the first half of the fourth game the other starting comer back sophomore Mike Travis went out with a badly sprained ankle He been able to return So starting free safety Toby Lantz Ed Grisamore Macon Telegraph and News ATHENS Vince Dooley be accused of thinking any unholy thoughts about Temple this week The Georgia coach is approaching Satur opponent with the same reverence he would any other team Upcoming showdowns with lorida and Auburn altered his sermons this week Although his sixth ranked have been installed as a 24 point favorite against their 2 5 opponent Dooley has kneeled to praise Temple all week is as capable as any football team on our schedule of beating us if we come ready to play and play a good football Dooley said lorida and Auburn two teams Georgia must beat the next two weeks to win its fourth straight Southeastern Conference title will start knocking heads approximately an hour after Georgia puts its 23 game home winning streak on the line against Temple But Dooley has made it clear he stand for any scoreboard watching between the hedges at Sanford Stadium He wants his team to stay wise to the Owls 1 indeed have a Dooley said problem will be ourselves in addition to Temple ourselves being the coaches and team But team seems more motivated than intimidated And last game films might have awakened the team that played to its potential in three games Campbell for one says he isn't inti midated Just ready was the dirtiest team we played last year 1 care il they read this and get fired up because going to be ready to play(too was pretty obvious they were out to get me out of the game but they do much to me after the first couple of plays Bo (Jackson) scored once and they hit him after he was five yards in the end In three games last year Campbell caught first quarter shots similar to Twice flags were thrown But not in the lorida game just said Campbell thought a flag should NEBRASKA presently 8 0 has Kansas State Iowa State Kansas and Oklahoma left to play Only Oklahoma with a 5 2 overall record and the same 3 0 Big Eight mark as the Comhuskers has even a remote chance of prevailing The other three own a combined 8 12 1 mark with none having a winning record Texas is currently 6 0 with games remaining against Texas Tech Houston TCU Baylor and Texas which combined are 13 18 3 Only Baylor 4 2 1 has won more often than it has lost It is a shame and a mark against the NCAA for not having a playoff system that there is no way for Nebraska and Texas to meet for the college championship should they finish the year ranked 1 2 Nebraska and the Big Eight Conference are tied to the Orange Bowl while Texas and the Southwest Conference are aligned with the Cotton So who would be left to challenge Nebraska in the Orange Bowl? Right now it would be North Carolina unbeaten in seven games but which has played a succession of mediocre teams South Carolina Memphis State Miami of Ohio William and Mary Georgia Tech Wake orest and NC State are 18 31 combined THE TARHEELS have the toughest part of their schedule ahead Maryland on the road this Saturday followed by Clemson at home Virginia on the road and Duke at home The Orange Bowl people the way things stand now would love to have a Nebraska North Carolina matchup The Sugar Bowl is up for grabs with five teams still in the running for the SEC title and the host spot Bowl officials will probably pass on Georgia should the Bulldogs not win the crown outright since been to New Orleans three straight years They want lorida because of the history of not having much of a following when they play in post season contests They would likely ignore Alabama already with two losses and with Bear Bryant no longer at the helm This leaves Aubum and Tennessee as the two who would be most favored The Cotton Bowl folks know who they want Georgia against Texas And they are aware that the only way they can land the Bulldogs is for them to suffer a loss TWO GAMES this weekend will go a long way toward settling the Rose Bowl Michigan and Illinois both with 5 0 league marks and one outside defeat play for the Big Ten lead and Washington 3 0 in the PacificTO and 6 1 overall (LSU steamrolled the Huskers) and UCLA 3 0 1 in loop action but 3 3 1 overall will battle for their league lead Washington would be virtually home free by winning If Illinois prevails over Michigan it would be a heavy favorite to top the Big 10 If Michigan triumphs the Wolverines would still have to slip past Ohio State The bowl picture is markedly different this year because there are no really appealing independents Notre Dame and Pittsburgh have already lost twice Penn State has three defeats The best record belongs to Miami of lorida 7 1 but the Hurricanes have West Virginia East Carolina and SU yet to play West Virginia 6 1 and Boston College 64 are next in line The major bowls aren't going to beat down any doors to get at this bunch Which means that more major conference also rans are going to have a shot at the big money The minor bowls have been made more attractive too by the NCAA's decree that they must pay a minimum $400000 to each competing team Georgia incidentally is being wooed hotly by the iesta Bowl 1 he Bulldogs though will definitely be headed for higher ground unless they fall to both lorida and Auburn Television 8:00 AM ESPN SportsCenter AM ESPN SportsWeek well have been wearing a eye on his jersey instead of the No 14 THE PLAYS are a year old and until a few days ago they had joined the countless other hard licks that Camp bell had taken since becoming quarterback be said about the lorida game and the Auburn game and to get ourselves ready for this bail game In this day and time if you don't do that it would be a sad mistake and you can certainly get beat" So far Dooley hasn't had much of a prob lem selling his players on the possibility of an upset The Owls may be 2 5 but four of those losses have come against a brutal schedule of Pittsburgh Penn State Boston College and East Carolina think going to be looking forward to playing Aubum and said defensive tackle Donald Chumley I think everybody realizes you overlook anyone especially nowadays Temple does a lot of different things and they could present a lot of trouble to us We have to approach this game just like we are playing somebody like lor Said quarterback Todd Williams think we realize that if we are going to reach our goals going to have to win all our games I think have as big a letdown as some people think protect our This is basic Circle the wagons and protect your own Especially when playing against a defense that plays like Hells Angels of Gainesville lorida has heard this rap before Another opponent called the Gators a dirtv football team Others have But those plays with the aid of game accused defense of taunting Once Marshall a defensive end for films have come back to memory tms the University of lorida had seen the play was going inside he went after Campbell He handeled him the way a bad guy wrestler handles a television opponent ST Jackie Crosby Macon Telegraph and News If as a child you were always picked last for a kickball game or if you were never the all star baseball player your parents hoped you would be you consider your self an entire athletic disaster Chances are you were bom that way not an athletic disaster but with a certain fiber in your muscles or certain physical features that made it hard to compete in sports that require hana eye coorainauon According to Dr Robert Arnot who spoke Thursday night at Macon Junior College each person's physical make up his heart lung and frame size mus cle fiber type and motor skills deter mines the kind of the athletics in which he will excel "All of us are bom with a Certain sprint er endurance muscle Arnot says like Bill Rodgers (a world class marathon runner) probably lias 95 percent endurance muscle fiber type and it remains unchanged by training" Arnot a physiologist who appears frequently on the "CBS Morning News" to comment on sports medicine and has worked In the past as a commentator on Wide World of spoke on a topic much different from sports medicine He calls his field of interest sports sci ence which is a fancy name tor doing the kind of exercises i hat give a person the most they can get from their certain body type cine Center in 1980 and athletes of all sports cross country skiers runners speed skaters cyclists oarsmen and lugers trained in an enviroment full of electronics and computers With Arnot directing the training each athlete could measure in tangibles how hard or long they must train to get the maximum use from their already exceptional bodies Elaborate equipment of wires and steel belts attached to the athletes measured the intensity and levels of training The system is much like those used in East Germany a count ry for which Arnot says he has a great deal of respect In fact most of the research he did In founding the center at Lake Placid NY came from European countries the United States we are far advanced in the field of sports medicine mainly orthopedics" Arnot says "In East Germany all levels of athletics are concerned with performance They go beyond sports to enforcing that all of their athletes are selected very carefully according to their skills" But in places like East Germany children as young as 3 who happen to be physiologically gifted with these certain muscle fiber types or motor skills about which Arnot speaks are swept away from home sent to special schools with full time professors that cultivate and fine tune the innate skills and are not seen again for 10 or 13 years At this time they will be competing for gold medals at lhe Olympic Games ARNOT BELIEVES athletes in the United States are beginning to realize that there is a science to sports and that they can use it to make them better performers is this form of objective measurement that no coach can give the athletes in which athletes are interested in" Arnot savs getting better another sophomore moved to the comer and Harrison assumed his position Auburn says 'dirty is motivating not intimidating nr 1 ST
