B-10 Alton Evening Telegraph Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1972 Yipes! says Raich over being named Everybody's pointing the finger toward Roxana's Shells as the team to beat in the Mississipip Valley Conference race, but coach Charley Raich isn't buying it. "How can they say that!?" he screams. "We've only five starters back from last year, and have had one letterman quit. "If they're gonna pick anybody — why not Wood River!? They're loaded." Raich's five starters include a pair of two-year lettermen, fullback Bill Allen, a 190- pound senior, and 200-pound tackle Ron Grafford, who's also a kicking specialist. Three others who own letters as starters include quarterback George Peters, 155; halfback Mike Phelan, 165; and tackle Greg Knipping, 190, all seniors. Raich's eight other returning lettermen are senior guards Rick Biggs, 165; Greg Exton, 160; and Jim McCoy, 180, a junior. Senior ends Kevin Hunter, 175; Dennis Sidwell, 175; and Steve Corbin, 190, a junior. Senior 'linebacker Dennis Pashday, 185, and center R. B. Williams, 185, round out the crop. Senior halfback Gary Hawkins, who had a letter to his credit, decided to forego football, according to Raich. "Count 'em.
