Total reveiuir from the 2 per cent state sales tax came to $i».i.- 332,524. Of that amount, SlT.TS'fl.- fi35 _ or 27.1R per cent — came from food stores. The total receipts also reflected a high level of business prosperity. They indicate total retail sale? of more than S;UM,000.000. The percentage of sales tax produced by the food establishments ir down a little from the previous fiscal year, when they represented 27.67 per cent of the $64,662,220 yield. i The nearly 18 million dollars in lax paid on food and grocery store items indicates purchases of $887,- flOO.479 for the last fiscal year. ; Actually, these figures don't necessarily mean lowans laid out quite that much for edibles. They include purchases of non-food j .items handled by grocery stores. Grocery stores and meat markets accounted for $13,262,574, or a little over 20 per cent, of the total receipts. Next to the food group, the biggest slice of tax—$16,190,904 — came from general merchandise stores. That's 24.78 per cent of the total. Hardware, implement and farm machinery stores led this classification with $5,181,034, followed closely by department and gcner- al stores, $5,059,715. Drug stores came in with $2,057,573, and household and electric appliance stores with $1,639,208. Sales taxes from other classifications of retail dealers included: Apparel (men's and women's clothing stores, shoe stores, etc.) $2,798,635; furniture, fixtures and equipment $2,476,963; motor vehicle group (filling stations, parking lots, garages, accessory stores, etc.) $6,461,108; lumber and building materials $6,625,837; vending machines $179,704. Services group (hotels, movies, print shops, shoe repair shops, fu- neral homes, etc.) $1,860,542; contractors $314,714; public utilities, and transportation $5,926,205; mis- j cellaneous $4,741,893. I The 2 per cent state use tax, j paid on items purchased outside | the state and brought into Iowa, I produced $12,019,516 in revenue, as against $11,204,836 in the previous fiscal year. Of the total, $2,401,198 came from consumers, $3,185,113 from retailers and $6,433,206 from new motor vehicles. The area of square miles.
