rHE REGISTER-NEWS — MT. VERNON. ILLINOIS THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1963 Tryon May Be Next Big Film Star By IIAL BOYLE NEW YORK (AP)-The hoi* esly of Tom Tryon, who may be Hollywood's next big star, is as impresive as his acting ability. A year ago Tom, who is 6 feet 4, dark and handsome, was a good journeyman actor well- known to movie and television producers, but comparatively unknown to the public. Then Otto Preminger picked him over 20 other candidates for one of the best roles on the movie horizon for some time. The title role is in "The Cardinal." After viewing some of the early scenes, Preminger signed Tryon, who looks much like Bishop Sheen and Sir Laurence Olivier, for five more films. Tom is neither Irish nor Cath- olice. He is of Dutch-English descent, and as a youth in Hartford, Conn., attended a typical New England Congregational church — "You know, big, white steeple, white pillars, and hard seats." Although fascinated by the ritual of the Catholic Church, Tryon said his experience in portraying "The Cardinal" had not made him any more religious. "I'm in no sense a convert," he said frankly. "But after President Kennedy's death — I don't usually go to church too PEPPER POTTERY — Lady Sarah Coke, 19, daughter of Lady Leicester, Inspects salt and pepper pots made of ivory-bodied clay which resemble chessmen. "I felt at home there," he said. Tom, who studied painting at Yale University, spent three years in the Navy. He didn't decide to become an actor until after he had tried a few walk- on parts in a summer stock company and performed such other theatrical chores as holding up television cue cards. After an apprenticeship on Broadway, Tom worked in about 10 films and more than a hundred television shows before Preminger, who has always had a canny eye for a promising newcomer, gave him the biggest break of his career. 'Television gives you the chance to learn to act in front of 10 million people," Tryon said. "But the trouble with it is that the industry has become too Imitative. As soon as anyone comes up with a bright new idea, everyone else rushes in and tries to copy it. "Now it is just rubberstamp- lng sausages." Tom said that one of the funniest things about his recent fame came when a fan magazine writer asked him to name "all the disasters in your life, such as whether your mother ing data on the Great Lakes in 1SG0. All five lakes are below 1S60- 19S2 average levels, as well as those for the last 10 years. None is expected to start rising before the end of February, and six months hence it is predicted all still will bo below both the long-term and 10-year averages. The Corps of Engineers blames primarily a series of years of below normal precipitation in the Great Lakes basin. Below-average levels have prevailed continuously on all except Ontario since the beginning of 1962. NEW THEOLOGICAL.
