4C The Macon Telegraph Tuesday Aug 12 1997 Speedway to add IRL race Continued from 1C the AMS oval and a mile long road course built the previous year in the infield The IMSA race did not draw many spectators however and was dropped after only one season The IRL race which will feature the same open wheel cars now used in the Indianapolis 500 will be run on the same quad oval configu ration the Winston Cup cars will be using beginning this November Although it will be the Indy Racing first visit to the AMS it will not be the first time open wheel racers have run on the track AMS hosted 10 Indy car races from 1965 83 Rick Mears won five of those races Johnny Rutherford three Mario Andretti one and Gordon Johncock one All four of those drivers were Indy 500 victors are pleased to bring the cars that race in the Indianapolis 500 back to Atlanta Motor said Tony George chairman of the Indianapolis track and founder of the IRL The IRL started two years ago as a less expensive alternate to the CART series that had been run ning at Indy added races in Charlotte and Texas this season Leo Mehl executive director of the IRL said the addition of Atlanta next year continues the new orga expansion into the tradi tional hotbed of NASCAR racing of our goals is to expand into new markets and struck a gold mine Mehl said are providing rich entertainment and confident the fans in Atlanta will embrace our product Atlanta is one of the healthiest motorsports markets in the coun try and the facility is first Because of the Georgia heat in August the decision was made to add lights to AMS so that the IRL race could be run at night Approximately 1200 fixtures 75 miles of wire and 520 tons of con crete will be needed for the lighting system which will provide 12 bil lion candlepower When lights were added to the Charlotte track a few years ago NASCAR qualifying and the Winston Select all star race held there were shifted to night But it is unlikely the two NASCAR races at Atlanta will be run at night due to the cool early spring and late fall weather when they are now held unless the date for either event is changed Vegas to get NASCAR race LAS VEGAS NASCAR's top drivers will be testing their luck in this gambling city next year NASCAR officials have called a news conference for today to announce a Winston Cup stock car race for Las Vegas in early March The race is expected genetic material isolated from these sam Atlanta tops Marlins in the ninth Continued from 1C from elix Heredia to lead off the ninth inning moved to second on a Mark Lemke sacrifice and third after an intentional walk to Javy Lopez was followed by a most unintentional walk to Tony Graffinino That brought up Bautista with the bases loaded and confidence from two game winning plays in the last week and a half one on a solo home run against the Cardinals and one on an outfield catch against the Marlins in lorida hitting your mind has to be 100 said Bautista 3 for 5 as a pinch hitter for the Braves have to trust yourself and what doing right Brown and Maddux facing each other for the sec ond time in the 11 days of August pitched to a draw again They each left having allowed a run apiece Brown after seven innings 102 pitches four hits five walks and four strikeouts Maddux after eight innings 98 pitches five hits one walk and seven strikeouts Maddux said announcement of his five year contract extension had no bearing on his perfor mance Monday night but it did have an effect the last time he faced Brown on August 1 because his deal was basically done before that start in lorida long before announcement which he admit ted after Monday's start was done two starts Maddux said was just a matter of getting the paperwork done the insur i ance and the physical The first time out in lorida was I hard mentally even though it announced offi i cially (By Monday) 1 was fine with it No big i The rarest of occurrences probably cost Brown the i win his own mental mistake With runners at first and second Brown fielded a grounder to the mound I from red McGriff He looked to third and threw to i first for one out when he had a sure double play if he i had thrown to second Then a physical error cost him a run and tied the game 1 1 He had walked Klesko to create the force out and bring up Lemke acing a fullcount Lemke rolled I a grounder down the first base line which Brown field ed He went home with his throw but pulled catcher I Charles Johnson off the plate in the process allowing Michael Tucker home plate safely Brown saved him self anymore grief by coaxing a double play from pinch hitter Ed Giovanola did everything possible to keep us in Brown said made a mental error and then I com pounded it with a physical errorThis is just one game got a month and a half left and go out and play hard against Craig Counsel! scored only run after he jumped on Maddux with a triple to the right center gap to lead off the third inning He scored on a broken bat single off
