led most of the way The Bulls take their first lead of the fourth quarter until Luc Longley hit a jumper off a feed from Jordan with 3 minutes left A short jumper in the lane by Jordan put Chicago ahead 78 77 with 1:57 left but Malone answered with a driving layup after fooling his defender with a head fake Jordan missed a shot on next possession but Ron Harper grabbed the offensive rebound and found Scottie Pippen for a wide open 3 pointer and an 81 79 lead Those were the last of 27 points by Pippen whose status for Game 1 was doubtful until a couple of hours before gametime Pippen also had nine rebounds despite a soft tissue injury on his left foot John Stockton who scored 16 points and had 12 assists put Utah back ahead 82 81 on a 3 pointer with 51 seconds left ifteen seconds later Jeff Hornacek was called for a touch foul on Jordan who made one of two shots to tie the game at 82 Stockton then dribbed the shot clock down and missed a screened 3 pointer and Malone was fouled in the race for the loose ball And Malone a 77 percent foul shooter who also missed two crucial ones late in Game 7 of the 1996 Western Conference finals against Seattle missed both Jordan and Pippen were the only players to score in double figures for Chicago Rodman had four points and 12 rebounds Hornacek had 11 points for the Jazz whose preci sion shooting and crisp passing seemed to stun a United Center crowd looking forward to a fifth NBA title in seven years for their team But Stockton also had seven of playoff high 18 turnovers and the Jazz shot only 7 for ll at the foul line Utah led through most of the fourth quarter but the Bulls finally went ahead thanks to two of mistakes Able to beat his man twice in a row he dribbled into the lane and left his feet without knowing what he would do Both mistakes resulted in turnovers and Chicago capitalized with a 6 0 run Jordan had the first four points on jumper and an 8 foot bank shot and jumper put the Bulls ahead 76 75 with 3 minutes left It was a game that started and ended poorly for Malone He missed seven of his first eight shots including two layups over the first seven minutes But the Jazz got a boost late in the period from backup point guard Howard Eisley whose consecutive jumpers in the final 33 seconds gave the Jazz an 18 17 lead after one quarter Utah eventually got its lead up to seven points on a 3 pointer by Stockton with 3:02 left in the half and the Jazz led 42 38 at halftime after a 3 pointer by Russell with 55 seconds left Hornacek scored 11 points in the third quarter for the Jazz who led for all but 17 seconds of the period Pippen made a 3 pointer with 1:32 left to give Chicago a 57 56 lead its first since the midpoint of the second quarter but Utah answered with five straight points and led 64 62 entering the fourth Notes: Malone reinjured a sore on his right hand first suffered from a floor burn in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals Chicago assistant coach Tex Winter drew a technical foul in the second quarter for something he said to referee Bill Oakes seven turnovers matched his season high The Milwaukee Bucks in 1971 were the last team to win its NBA inals debut Braves return to power game Continued from 1C noon getting home runs from Ryan Klesko and Jeff Blauser to earn a split of the series with the Giants winning 4 3 in front of 46501 fans at Turner ield needed that game after last game was so manager Bobby Cox said felt good to win a game when club leading 10th homer his fifth in his last eight games was a three run shot in the fourth inning against Giants starter Kirk Rueter that tied the game Blauser connected for his seventh home run with one out in the eighth inning off reliever Jim Poole (2 1) to give the Braves their only lead of the game "I know what it said Klesko who hit his first three home runs at Turner ield in the last three games against the Giants getting better extension Maybe quicker with my hands My right wrist is feeling good Maybe heating up a little bit and feeling Terrell Wade had lasted beyond the fifth inning in only two of his seven starts while his earned run average had risen to 481 The left hander was hearing ques tions about his status as fifth starter for the first time and he did nothing to quiet the talk in the first inning ive consecutive hits by the Giants produced a 3 0 lead and when Wade sat down between innings Tom i Glavine approached him told me that if I miss miss low and fall right into the strike Wade said was a little frus trated in the first inning but I said I just have to put it behind me because early Wade turned himself around allowing only three hits over the next five innings and he possibly saved his job Mike Bielecki (2 3) came on and went the next two innings then Mark Wohlers pitched the ninth for his 12th save had an up and down Cox said could have gotten out with less (runs) and he could have got ten out with more But he worked out of jams today and a good The Braves focused on Barry Bonds and were success ful in holding him down limiting him to only three hits in 14 at bats with a pair of RBI Giants manager Dusty Baker was happy to depart with a split of the four game series someone had said we'd go 2 2 coming in here" he said probably be Klesko hitting only 200 against left handers this sea son took advantage of a Rueter mistake San left hander issued a two out walk to Blauser in the fourth bringing Klesko a 556 career hitter against him to the plate Miniature cars are giant fun Continued from 1C Alexander said little cars are a blast to drive and a lot faster than people would He and partner Marvin Wade of Cordele recently acquired the South Georgia distribution rights for Legends cars and have formed Motors to market them They have each purchased a car of their own to drive and along with a couple of others they have been practicing at Cordele Motor Speedway for the last few weeks realize their dream of actually racing when the 38 mile dirt oval hosts its first Legends race Saturday night The local drivers expect to be joined by 15 to 20 from the Atlanta area who are regulars at Lanier Raceway been working with Ben Sumner (who oper ates the Cordele track) and the Atlanta Legends guys for several weeks trying to put this together Most of the Atlanta drivers have only raced on paved tracks before so really excited about trying a dirt Alexander said Alexander 49 whose main business is as a partner in Barge Air Conditioning in Cordele has returned to racing many years after his first try but it has long been in his mind used to race motorcycles motocross when I was a young guy I did it for three or four years but then I tore up my knee and decided I needed to find another hobby Since then hunted and fished and watched racing on TV the same as most other guys my Three years ago he saw Legends cars racing for the first time on TV from Charlotte saw them and said need me one of those' I talked to some other guys I know who like racing and we all said like to try the Legends cars But no one ever did Until this year Part of the problem was that there was no where to race the cars in Middle Georgia Lanier Raceway a 38 mile asphalt oval north of Atlanta has been holding weekly races for three years have 55 to 60 cars racing there on a regular basis by far that biggest Alexander said But it is also a long haul from Warner Robins Then Alexander met Scott Tanner of Albany who pulls his Legends car to Charlotte every Tuesday to race there just make a trip like that on a regular Alexander said Then he heard that Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton was adding a short Legends track between the starting line and pit road as part of its reconfigu ration into a quad oval for Winston Cup racing Although the AMS reconstruction be finished until November that convinced Alexander to take the plunge sold my boat and camper thinking buy a car and pull it to Lanier until the AMS track was ready then race But when Alexander visited Ray Little of Lawrenceville to see about buying a car Little talked him into becoming the South Georgia distributer and trying to get Legends racing started in the area was the only distributer in Georgia and said he had more than he could handle with the Lanier racers so I got Marvin who owns Wade orklift Service in Cordele to go in with me to start selling the cars in South Alexander said whole idea is to get enough people to buy cars to have someone to race Alexander chose the Cordele track because he had become part owner late last season of a Camaro driven in the stock class there by Junior Cross a good track for Legends racing Most people think of Legends cars being strictly for paved tracks because what seen on TV but a number of areas where they are very popular on dirt tracks been running them at Cordele in exhibi tions on Saturday nights and in practice sessions on Sunday afternoons for several weeks learning how to set them up and they do really well been turn ing some laps in the 20 to 21 second range and the Late Models (the top class for full sized cars at the Cordele track) are usually running qualifying laps only in the low 18s cars have speedometers but we have a chart that says if pulling 9400 rpm on the engine in fifth gear going 92 mph been pulling 9400 to 9500 rpm when he hits the end of the Legends racing was started by Charlotte Motor Humpy Wheeler and road racing veteran Elliott orbes Robinson saw that small tracks were beginning to dry up and that the cost of racing was going up every year so they decided to try an idea that would provide another more affordable type of Alexander said "The Legends cars have real ly taken off any place been given a The concept was to build small safe simple to ojer ate cars that were easy to work on and that could be purchased completely race ready Body shapes of and Chevy and ord coups and sedans were chosen because they were the cars used in NASCAR's early years A sanctioning body INEX (short for inexpensive racing) was formed to closely regulate the racing with an emphasis on safety and keeping all the cars the same Of course inexpensive racing is a relative term Purchase price for a legends car is $12250 or dirt track veterans who are accustomed to rescuing old Mustangs Camaros or Novas from junk yards and spending $1000 to $2000 to turn them into Ministock or Enduro class cars tlie price is a major sticker shock But Alexander said when you factor in upkeep costs and the time required to turn an older car into a racer and keep it running Legends racing seem so expensive lower classes at the local tracks are so rough that constantly having to work on the cars to repair crash damage Legends racers have wrecks sometimes but they seem to beat and bang on each other as Alexander said "And if you start getting up into the higher dirt track classes the cars are more expensive You get to the Late Models and just the engines cost more than a Legends car and the engines are only good for a few races The Legends guys from Atlanta talked to say been racing the same engines for three years they just change the oil every three races and once a year they freshen them up change the rings and that sort of thing" The INEX rules also ktep costs down Alexander said can add maybe $1000 worth of options to the basic car but INEX allow many changes About the only ones allowed are things to improve the han dling for the track you run You can change the springs adjust the shocks and tire pressure change the caster and camber but about it Everyone has to run the Legends hard compound tires and last all season You do anything to the engine except for normal maintenance If something breaks you have to replace it with stock parts pretty much buy the car put a number on it and go Alexander hopes race will create more interest in the cars so that Legends racing will become a regular event at the Cordele track Sumner wants us to have at least 10 cars running the track to have weekly races It might take the rest of this year to get enough people interested to make it go but I believe by next season be He says two groups have been most interested in Legends racing so far men in their 40s and 50s who used to race and want to get back into it or have not raced but always wanted to try and youngsters trying to gain racing experience that used to race and got out because of the expense and time involved really like this because the cars come ready to race and you have to do a lot to them between races And you have to be a mechanic to work on them so good for some one new to To begin with all of the Legends cars racing at Cordele will be in one class But once the car count is up enough to allow it Alexander says the competition classes called for by INEX will be adopted Young Lions for those 14 18 years old Charger for those with little or no driving experience Semipro for those with two years experience or who have won three feature races in a lower class and Masters for those 40 and older cars are all the same so the idea is to put dri vers of the same ability Alexander said In addition to Legends car race there will also be races in all of the other regular Cordele classes Practice laps begin at 7 pm and races at 8 pm The Cordele track is just west of 1 75 at exit 35 or more information on the Cordele races call (912) 273 5102 or information on Legends cars call Alexander at 929 1376 or Wade at 535 4254 Bailey claims tide of astest Continued from 1C the organization of the event in general He said he was running under what he called Bailey had proclaimed ever since the race was put together in ebruary that he owned the title of astest and even if Johnson beat him at this rarely run distance that would not change is not a sprinter He runs the 200 Bailey said after the race Now we can get real sprinters in the event and make it They were each guaranteed $500000 with an additional $1 mil lion to the winner Before the race Johnson had said he would be willing to risk his $500000 appearance fee in a win ner take all purse Bailey was more cautious saying he would not part with his guarantee After the race Bailey paraded around the track soaking up the cheers of his countrymen while Johnson sat on the ground being attended to afraid to Bailey said think they should run this race again so I can kick his ass again was never any doubt in my mind that I am the fastest man in the Bailey started in the inside lane of the two lane track just the way he wanted That was the only thing he was happy about before the race Bailey got out of the blocks quickly and was leading at 50 meters shortly before completing the curve And he still was in front when Johnson suddenly pulled up After the race Johnson who had earlier been highly critical of demeanor shook his hand and congratulated him While that was taking place a hail of fireworks enveloped the arena while the crowd estimated about 25000 well below the expected 45000 was celebrating The event which had under gone much criticism since its inception because of several orga nization snafus was in jeopardy as late as Saturday night Earlier Sunday Bailey had taken his final workout over the track and was very upset The track was supposed to be set up so that the first 75 meters were around a curve and the final 75 meters on a straightaway Bailey insisted the curve measured 85 meters giving Johnson an advan tage Johnson specializes in run ning the curve while Bailey is accustomed to a straightaway coach Dan Pfaff advised him not to run And his agent Ray lynn said Bailey was ready to pull out after attempts to get the track changed were rebuffed by the organizers inally Bailey relented saying would look like sidestep And Sunday in a statement issued three hours before the race he said run for my country and my family because I still believe in the idea of this event the two best in the world in Bailey's family was in atten dance as was Despite all the obstacles Bailey contended he would beat Johnson And he was right much to the joy of the partisan crowd Prior to the Bailey Johnson showdown there were five other head to head matchups Okkert Brits of South Africa won the pole vault at 19 feet 4 inch es then missed twice at a world record 20 2 before stopping so the main event could go on American Lawrence Johnson cleared 18 10 In the other events Heike Drechsler of Germany won the long jump at 22 4 beating Jackie Joyner Kersee whose best 1 was 22 3 Charles Austin won the high jump at 7 6 beating Patrik
