Smithfield Homemakers Cook-out at meeting MAYNARD — The June meeting of the Farm Bureau Homemakers of Smithfield township began at 11 a. m. Tuesday, June 12, with a cookout at the home of Mrs. Leroy Henniges. Eleven women were present to receive the instructions in preparing the food for cooking as given by Mrs. Arnold Paul and Mrs. Roy Potter. The afternoon program included discussions on the new family program. Mrs. Benton Harrison reviewed the talk on "Healthful Living and Insecticides" given by Paul Elam, manager of the animal health department of the Farm Service company, Ames, at the recent Fayette county meeting. Mrs. Charles Schlumbuhm, Oelwein, county women's chairman, and Mrs. Donald Rainer, Fayette, healthful living chairman of Westfield township gave important information on rabies, tetnus, lettro, antibiotics and on chemicals and poisons found around kitchens. The meeting closed with a report of the recent girls' health contest in Des Moines by Mrs. Potter, and an announcement by Mrs. Henniges of materials available on foreign trade. June 12, in the Community hall. Jack gave a report of his experiences while at Boys State the past week and thanked the Legion for making it possible for him to attend. At the meeting of the auxiliary earlier in the evening it was an- nouced that Jerry Jellings and Gloria Wells, eighth grade students at West Central Community school, had been selected by the teachers as the boy and girl eligible to receive the annual citizenship award Offered by the auxiliary. The selection was based on the ability in leadership as well as scolastic records. Mrs. Paul A. Buenneke, poppy chairman, reported 450 puppies sold in May, and Mrs. Marvin Ingeis and Mrs. Austin Heaton reported that a large bouquet of poppies was placed in each of the three local churches for Memorial Sunday. Hostesses for the joint social hour were Mrs. Tom Samuelson. Mrs. Buenneke and Mrs. John McKoon. Former Upper Iowa Professor promoted Dr. Willis H. Walker, former Upper Iowa professor, has Ivn named chairman of the Milljk-'n im iversitj! department of history a:id political science, effective July 1. Dr. Walker, for 15 years an assistant professor of Millikin, will succeed Dr. Daniel J. Gage, who retires after 19 years on the Millikin faculty. Dr. Walker earned his bachelor's, inaste '"s and doctor's degree at the State University of Iowa. He taugln at Ka.st Tennessee State college. Ehlers special guest At Legion meeting MAYfJARD - Jack Ehlers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ehlers, was a 'special guest of the American Legion and auxiliary at their regular meeting Tuesday evening.
