Vilhjalmur Stefansson was a man who believed that the north was a place people could live in if they learned how to adapt themselves. He explored the Arctic for 11 years, and part of that time he lived as an Eskimo. He was born on Nov. 3, 1879 in Manitoba, Canada, of Icelandic parents. He grew up and studied in the United States. Then he returned to Canada and set out to join an Arctic expedition. The rest of the group wa 1 ? shipwrecked before it reached him. Stefansson found himself stranded, alone and inexperienced, in the Arctic. For 18 months he lived with the Eskimos and learned to live, speak, eat, hunt, and fish like an Eskimo. This taught him how to be able to find his own food rather than be dependent on stores of supplies. In an expedition to the Coppermine River and Victoria Island, Stefansson showed that it was possible to travel light a ad live off the country. On this trip he discovered a tribe of "blond" Eskimos on Victoria Island. In 1913 he pushed bevcnd the Eskimo frontier into a region believed to have no animal life. Stefansson and two companions traveled GUI) miles over the sea ice nor f .h of Alaska, living on saels and polar bears. Before returning in 1918 he mapped 100,000 square miles of unknown polar territory. Stefansson then began writing and lecturing to spread his ideas about thu importance of the north. Ha once lived only on m«at for a whole year to study the effects of diet on health. He died in 1962. FUN TIME The Riddle Box 1. What tree is the saddest? 2. Where was Queen Elizabeth crowned? 3.
