Portland Press Herald riday ebruary 10 1995 5D SPORTS PIRATES Continued from Page ID kind of like what I do every But he is a little worried After all he has not musical experience other' than the couple of classes he took at the University of Wisconsin never played an instrument or anything like he said be fun different And the things that you normally do are the things you usually enjoy the Besides he said the orchestra pretty much what doing They going to follow me just got to stand there My job is pretty But if he had job? know about he said be nervous if I had to do THE REE PSO concert will be held at the Cumberland County Civic Center at 12:30 pm It will feature music from Pirates of the theme from and the William Tell Overture Toshiyuki Shimada the music director and conductor of the PSO will be presented a Pirates jersey before the concert Other Pirates will appear at the Museum of Maine at 2 pm to help youngsters make Valen Day cards BRIAN CURRAN a Pirates defenseman has received a four game suspension from the American Hockey League for an incident in last game against the Albany River Rats Curran who has a goal seven assists and 200 penalty minutes in 41 games for the first place Pirates will be out until Portland plays at Spring field on eb 21 At 4:01 of the third period in 7 2 win over Albany Curran received a double minor for rough ing when he hit Reid Simpson from behind into the boards Curran was coming to the aid of Portland center Jeff Nelson who had been hit by Simpson The River Rats appealed the pen alty and sent a tape to the AHL office Thursday morning the AHL informed the Pirates that the penal ties had been changed to a 10 minute misconduct a five minute major for hitting from behind and a game misconduct Because it was fifth game misconduct on the season he was suspended four games think I hit him as hard as I said Curran I obviously did nothing I can do now except sit out the four NBC affiliate's policy irks sports fans network If you are a golf fan frustrated with Channel failure to carry NBC complete package of golf events not alone So is NBC Sports This seems to be the time of year for complaints both from golf and basketball fans orced in doors by winter weather sports fans turn to their televisions for help The NBA season is in high gear and the professional golf season is just beginning U1UU1 LLUICXLVLJ IWV affiliate in southern Maine pro vides more angst than consolation for viewers who enjoy such sports And a concern for the folks at NBC Sports unusual to find an affiliate that clear 99 percent of the major sports events we says Rich Hyssey vice president for program planning and affiliate relations at NBC (WCSH and WLBZ in Ban gor both Maine Broadcasting Sys tem stations) are on a short list of stations we have clearance prob lems In 1994 Channel 6 pre empted or failed to clear 192 of 502 hours (38 percent) of sports pro gramming Hussey said the highest percentage among the ne 213 affiliates And Portland is the 85th largest market NBC serves The next highest pre emptor among stations in the top 100 markets is Nashville Tenn which failed to clear 82 hours (16 per cent) Hussey said the Nashville affiliate carries a heavy schedule of Southeastern Conference college football and basketball games on the horns of a real Hussey said delivers wonderful numbers (for daytime programming) but disappointed we lose this 4' Bob Smyth RadioTV Sports much sports programming and wish we could change that strength locally leads into our news and prime time program ming very well We fully under stand their philosophy even if we agree with it in the sports he said Channel philosophy is what angers sports fans in its viewing audience The cornerstone of that philosophy is consistency in its local newscast which got the high est November AC Nielsen rating in the Portland market for the 6 pm time slot Mike Marshall WCSH program director said the station is protec tive of its evening newscast important viewers know they can see the Channel 6 news at the same time every evening Mar shall said In fact WCSH has turned down all 4 pm games on schedule of NBA doubleheaders But protecting the newscast the only reason Channel 6 pre empts so much NBC sports pro gramming Another is based on an evaluation of the interests of its viewing audience And that evaluation Marshall said indicates more viewers prefer movies to most of sports programming get better ratings for Marshall said feel by running a movie provid ing an alternative (Unhappy sports WEEKEND ecu The highlights of this TV sports listings: TODAY Channel 6 NHL hockey SUNDAY Hartford at Tampa Bay 7:30 NBA basketball ptn SCNE All Star game at Phoenix 6:30 SATURDAY pm Channel 6 College basketball College basketball Boston University at Maine 1 North Carolina at Georgia Tech pm Channel 6 1:30 pm Channel 8 NHL hockey Connecticut at Syracuse 3 pm Washington at Boston 1:30 pm Channel 13 NESN NHLhockey Hartford at lorida 7:30 pm Boston at Buffalo 7 pm SCNE Channel 38 College hockey Los Angeles at Detroit 8 pm Massachusetts at Maine 7 pm ESPN fans) who call feel been slighted but movies still do better trying to get as many people to their (TV) sets as we can and also protect our news presence which we feel is very important to who we are here in this CHANNEL 6 carried the LPGA Tournament of Champions in Jan uary and has cleared The Players Championship March 25 26 the PGA Seniors Championship April 16 17 and the US Open June 17 18 They will not carry five additional events on schedule through June: the Buick Invitational this weekend the Bob Hope Classic next weekend the Honda Classic March 11 12 the Nestle Invitational March 18 19 and the reeport McMoRan Classic April 1 2 WCSH has made no decision on golf telecasts available after June (NBC has seven) but Marshall identified the US Open the US Senior Open and the Ryder Cup as the major events yet know how going to handle Marshall said If Channel 6 clear sports programming the options are few An affiliate for another network (WMTW and WGME) or an independent broadcast station (WPXT) could pick up the telecasts or Time Warner Cable could air the programming on a designated cable channel But WPXT a ox affiliate and secondary affiliate of United Para mount Network already has pro gramming commitments that now include sports (NL and NHL) And WMTW (ABC) and WGME (CBS) would have to pre empt their own network programming to make room for TIME WARNER Cable is an other story have a standing offer to Channel 6 and NBC to carry any and all pre empted said Jeff Darrell vice president of marketing and programming for Time Warner continue to be told that NBC want or allow us to cany that pro gramming If we get that permis sion we will cany Darrell said WCSH has an obli gation to help Time Warner obtain the pre empted programming by virtue of the retransmission agree ment Time Warner reached with Maine Broadcasting in November 1993 Channel Marshall said the station simply has to stay out of the way let (Time Warner) know what not taking 21 days ahead of time (per order of the Marshall said would certainly do nothing to pre vent them from getting the pro gramming and promoting it In fact we would like to see that programming on TV It would mean no calls from disappointed IN ANY CASE getting sports programming on a Time Warner Cable channel is unlikely to happen rarely done said Hussey a cable operator to carry our program ming is a last option and as far as I can tell pretty far down the Hussey said NBC would get no rating unless the programming was picked up by a broadcast station rather than a cable channel But Darrell said by registering the channel in advance with Nielsen NBC could get a rating What NBC get is pres sure on Channel 6 Approving the move would take the affiliate off the hook If sports fans could watch programming else where they would cease com plaining to the folks at Channel 6 Marshall even admitted that Bob Smyth is a staff writer for The Portland Newspapers DYKSTRA Continued from Page ID stance of the negotiating committee which has said it will never accept a salary cap or a tax that acts as a cap Dykstra loves baseball Lenny Dysktra is fortunate to be playing in the major leagues Lenny Dykstra wants to play baseball in he told ESPN far as going across have to ask me again in Dykstra scheduled to be paid $3114754 per day in 1995 said top players would soon discuss the strike with ehr you ask me I think that Usery tried to do best for both sides he kind of it looks like cut every thing in Dykstra said think a big chance we can get something done in his arena there with what he Usery was upset that manage ment circulated a two page docu ment containing the ideas the mediator conveyed to the sides on Tuesday His primary proposal was for a 50 percent tax on the portion of payrolls above $40 million which is about $700000 under the average were discussed orally with the parties but were never pre sented as a final recommendation either to the parties or to the Usery said have learned in the last two days that a document is being distri buted which purports to be my final recommendation It is not I have never issued such a he said Owners said they would reluc tantly accept the sugges tions for a settlement but the union rejected the ideas At least one lobbyist for the owners has distri buted the document on Capitol Hill pretty clearly indicates the clubs had no business releasing what they ehr said was an attempt to spur bargaining It was an attempt to get people to talk to one another It and never was intended to be a final Clinton who failed to get the sides to agree to arbitration during four hours of White House talks Tuesday night submitted a bill for binding arbitration on Wednesday but the Republican leadership interested The legislation was sent to the House Economic Opportuni ties and Education Committee and put on hold in the Senate No hearings are planned the plan received a resounding no from everyone in the Congress who would have to be said Mike Horak a spokesman for the Senate Labor and Human Resources Com mittee see it going Acting baseball commissioner Bud Selig returned to Washington on Thursday for a meeting with Democratic senators in the Capitol asked a lot of questions about the dispute the suggested Selig said have a lot of repect for Bill Usery Parts of his proposal we had a lot of problems LEGAL ADVERTISEMENT YARMOUTH WATER DISTRICT SEVENTY SECOND ANNUAL MEETING
