But little of the contents of the buildings were saved. About half an hour after the discovery of this fire another fire broke out on wharf, about a square from the first, in a three-story brick building occupied by a produce dealer. This building and one immediately north, used for the same purpose, were also destroyed.

Upon the discovery of this last and fifth fire during the twenty-four hours ending Sunday morning the greatest consternation prevailed. Market square and Main street were thronged with excited people, many believiDg an organized plan for the destruction of the entire city was being put into execution. Fire companies of Portsmouth and the navy yard again came over in response to rockets sent np as signals for assistance, and rendered invaluable On Campbell's wharf, where the fire threatened to Involve an entire square, the steamer Sylvester, lyiug near wharf, was put iu readiness to be dispatched to Old Point for government fire engines at Fort Monroe, but further assistance proved unnecessary. The original estimate of the Croton Aqueduct placed the largest possible use in after years at 00Q gallons daily. The average consumption for 1872 reached 90,000,000 gallons daily, and is of course constantly increasing. This fact shows that water like air must be abundant as space itself; and that the Croton river has served its day for freely and purely supplying the great metropolis with one of chief boons. Any man who has the power to state a fact 30 that it shall not easily lie forgotten, is a historian. Such a man is Verdi, M. D. It appears that lie was the family physician of the Seward family at the time of the attempt to assassinate its most important member, in Washington, in 1865. Now that years have elapsed and tho passions which eclipsed the truth in that troublous time have lulled or died altogether away, Verdi is right in judging that an impartial account of that event should be given to the world.

He takes this task In band and makes the pages of tbe Republic Monthly Magazine his communicating medium. It doe3 not seem to have occurred to Dr. Verdi that nobody ever heard of the periodical he selects except perhaps its immediate friends and publishers, but this consideration only increases his zeal to write. And the Doctor was no fool for this, either. He knew that Dana, of the Sun, would copy bis history.

And Daua did. So all the world saw it at length. We can easily forgive the toadyism with which rendition of the story is affected, for not every struggling medicine-man can practice in a noted family. Magazine for August contains an illustrated article ou the telegraph which is -nggestive in many particulars. It in clearness of statement. If any one give it, a careful reading aud conclude with any definite idea of what the author means to set forth he is possessed of a clearer head than most people. We really need readable articles on the subject of electricity and its applications, but they must be such as will convey instruction to the popular mind. As to its essential nature we may never know much more about this subtle agent than we do now; but as to tbe inodes of its action, inuch'more.

The possible uses of electricity are numberless. It seems to be the active spirit of the universe. The telegraph, too, is coming to be employed more extensively every year. And, inasmuch as a majority of people, while understanding in a vague way that messages are sent invisibly yet are not familiar with even the mechanism engaged in the operation, therefore we say any number of plain, untechnical articles upon tbe subject would be timely. contained in the residence of IS CEI LA NEO TE MS COLONEL J.

Whatever is needed or desired in the matter of entertainment may safely be trusted to tho hospitable instincts of Gen. Sharpe, who will make his distinguished visitor perfectly at home.

But our citizens will hardly need to Ire reminded by us that never before in the history of our city has it been honored by the visit of so distinguished a personage, aud it will lie their duty, and we doubt not their pleasure, to let him know they are sensible of the honor conferred upon our municipality. The man is coming who turned the tide of battle, and after a long and weary struggle conquered the rebellion and received the sword of Lee, the representative of the crushed Confederacy. And in his person he represents the majesty of the Republic, its dignity and its power. While in behalf of our citizens we extend to President Grant a hearty and generous welcome to our city, they will doubtless find other means of honoring their visitor. The water of wells, during cholera visitations, has ever proved a polent agent in insidiously helping the disease by the readiness with which poisonous exuditions from adjacent privies, sinks and pools have permeated the surface and contaminated the Water sources there hidden. Hence is it that reliable statistics prove running water is better for drinking and cooking purposes than subterranean water.
