10 REGISTER-NEWS — MT. VERNON, ILLINOIS We The Women :t tjl/KSTlONS—WIIAT MOKE XUKI) UK ASKED? BV BUTII MH.LKTT Newspaper Enterprise Assn. At Iowa State University they've got a computer playing Cupid—in the interest of science, of course. Fed individual answers to 120 questions, the computer blithely paired off nearly a thousand students attending a college "mixer." Six months from now the sociologists, at. the university who thought up the idea of putting the computer to work arranging blind dates are going to check and see how many of the machine-made introductions turned into campus romances. What I'd like to know Is how the professors ever thought up 120 pertinent questions to teed to the machine? As I recall my long-ago campus days, when offered a blind date a coed, herself, could think of only three questions to ask before making up her mind whether or not she wanted to take a chance on an unknown quantity. When the telephone rang in a sorority house or dormitory and one young man asked the girl he had a date with to line up a date for one of his friends, the girl trying to play Cupid was asked three questions—and always in the same order: How tall is he? Is ho a good dancer? Does he have a car? In four years of college, I Acousticon Hearing Center 719 Main Sr., Mr. Vernon, III. If it takes 120 questions instead of three to cinch a blind date today, young people must be a lot more complicated, critical or cautious than they used to be. I just, wish I knew what those 120 questions wore. At least 117 of them are ones we never thought to ask when I was a coed. BE ALERT AT, DUSK THE GLOBAL VIEW What Now In The Red Camp? o "7 LEON DENNEN Newspaper Enterprise Annlyst U NITED NATIONS, N.Y. — According to Moscow's Pravdo, Premier Khrushchev decided to call a special meeting of the powerful Communist Party Central Committee chiefly to discuss Russia's agricultural crisis and "lagging" chemical industry. But the press of Moscow's Kasl Europcon satellites gives a different view. They indicate that, the chief concern of the Central Committee will he Soviet-Chinese relations since Lyndon B. Johnson succeeded John F. Kennedy as President of the United States. TUESDAY. DECEMBER This is also the view of U. N. diplomats. Latin-American Reds, fnceil -with mass desertions due to the Russian-Chinese rift, have long urged Premier Khrushchev to settlo his dispute with Red China's Mao Tse-tung. The meeting never was held of course. But in the view of specialists on communism, the "peacemakers" in the Red camp are increasingly encouraged and backed by a strong pro-Chinese group inside the Soviet Central Committee. Even Poland's Party boss Wladyshiw Gomulk a, who was once hailed as a liberal mania's Ghoorghlu-Dej as a strong advocate of a Russian-Chinese get-together. -0- -0- -o- According to East European diplomats, Gomulka recently instructed Poland's envoys in Moscow and Peking to make themselves available as intermediaries between Khrushchev and Mao. A complete rift in the ranks of international communism has always been Gomulka's great nightmare. He is said to be the man who largely in to JUST WHAT SHE WANTED... an extension phone for Christmas! The Soviet premier was able in the past to exploit his friendly relations with President Kennedy as a strong argument against Mao's revolutionary brinkmanship. Gomulka, beset by his own economic troubles, had to concede that better relations with the United States could open new economic channels for the "building of socialism." Hasn't Poland received millions of dollars in American aid for more than a decade? President Tito of Yugoslavia, Italy's top Red Palmiro Tog- liatti r"d other Western Com munists continue to back Khrushchev's policy of peaceful coexistence. Rut dogmatic Reds like Gomulka now insist that President Kennedy's death must inevitably result in a change in American foreign policy. Lyndon B. Johnson, a Texas Democrat and a seasoned pragmatic politician, hardly qualifies as a "liberal" in their Marxist-Leninist book. Preslilen <I o h n s n n assured Prrimlrr Khrushchev In a special message that he will carry on President Kennedy's efforts to Improve relations between the U n i t e »1 States and Russia. He also it'.pruted his assurance in a personal conversation in Washington with First Deputy Premier Anastas Mlko- yan, Khrushchev's friend and personal emissary. Some specialists on Russia believe that the President's friendly gesture will strengthen Khrushchev's position in the Central Committee and may even postpone the long-awaited showdown between the Kremlin's revisionists and pro- Chinese dogmatists. The Soviet premier is apparently in no hurry to make peace with his Chinese rival. For the present at least he seems to be more concerned with East-West trade and American economic aid than with Mao's threats. Khrushchev is undoubtedly aware of reports reaching Britain and other Western governments that Red China's leader is gravely 111. He hinted as much recently when, after saying that politicians are limited by history and that only time will tell whether Mao or he was the better revolutionist, he added: "It even seems to me that this won't take very long."
