Defiant and angry to the end Nicholas Lee Ingram was put to death in elec tric chair riday after making his final statement by spitting at the warden Ingram 31 was pronounced dead at 9:15 pm after a day of appeals that left him alternately elated and pensive as he waited to hear wheth er he had won another stay of exe cution for the 1983 murder of JC Sawyer in Cobb County Nicholas Lee Ingram The con demned man was allowed to walk into the death chamber on his own He used his hands to slightly lift himself in to the large oak elec tric chair sitting in the middle of the cramped death chamber Warden AG Thomas read the execution order as six burly correc tions officers strapped Ingram tight ly to the chair At first Ingram looked ahead with an icy stare then he moved his head as if sur veying the witnesses Ingram showed no expression as the execution team attached leather straps to his waist elbows wrists and ankles When Thomas asked Ingram if he had a last statement the inmate quickly spat in direction and said nothing When asked if he wanted a prayer said in his behalf Ingram merely closed his eyes Guards then attached the elec trodes to his head and covered his face with a leather apron The electricity a four second jolt of 2000 volts followed by 1000 volts for seven seconds and 208 volts for two minutes was turned on at 9:06 pm fists clenched tightly and he jolted back into the electric chair His attorney Clive Stafford Smith leaned forward in his pew one of three in the witness room and covered his eyes with his hands Stafford Smith cried to him self and at one point opened his fingers to look into the execution chamber Other witnesses in the room in cluding several Cobb County offi cials showed no visible reaction After a six minute cooling down period Associated Press BOSTON Gina Grant seemed to be the perfect candidate for Harvard Univer sity: an IQ of 150 honor society member tennis team co captain tutor of underpriv ileged children Now Harvard has taken back its offer of early admission after learning that Grant bludgeoned her mother to death with a lead crystal candlestick five years ago deal with this tragedy every day on a personal level It serves no good purpose for anyone else to dredge up the pain of my Grant said in a statement especially distressed that my college career may now be in jeopardy The university would not comment on Gina Grant I case acknowl edging only that an early admission offer had been rescinded Spokesman Joe Wrinn said riday that Har vard occasionally with draws such offers be cause of a sudden drop in a who died in a chair had been given enough painkiller to kill an adult an autopsy found But an attorney for Dr Mari lois Laster of Tifton who has been blamed by state authorities for the death disputed children at Central City Park each year knew there was no way the event could be held in 1995 just got to be too Hill said riday sad to say but no way to control kids and parents who take down other children on their way to an Although the organization may try to sponsor other Easter activities in the future Kids Yule Love decided to end the egg hunt because of the dangers posed to children Hill said the event got bigger each year about 10000 children and parents showed up in 1994 to hunt for some 30000 eggs and crowd control became im possible despite the presence of law enforcement and
