weeks after a horrifying crash in the Indianapolis 500 the race car driver walked out of a rehabilitation hospital and returned to his home in Wisconsin Smiling talking and apparently well on his way to recovery ox left the hos pital with his wife Jean at his side It was latest step in his remarkable im provement since his car slammed head on into the first turn wall on the open ing lap of the race May 28 Doctors removed a blood clot from his brain but he was in a coma and in criti cal condition for five days while the po tentially fatal brain swelling subsided ox a midget car veteran who drove Indy cars only once a year finally re gained consciousness on June 2 but his condition changed little over the next four weeks Slowly he began respond ing to simple commands and became more alert by late June He was trans ferred from Methodist Hospital to the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana on Ju ly 6 and was released Wednesday night In the weeks since the crash thou sands of race fans sent cards or messag es wishing him well has been comforting to know so many people care and we will always remember this in our his wife said in a statement released Thursday by the hospital
