THINGS WORTH KNOWING Christmas Seal Sale Reaches $1,600 As Reports Still Come MAKING THE OLD BOY FEEL GOOD HE DAILY REPUBLICAN Owned end WILL 0. FEUDNER Editor President Zachariah girl, has forcibly focused the mind of public on the crime problem. There has been a tendency of late to let the bars down for the criminal. Punishment is long delayed, even in the worst of crimes. A kind- hearteu pubiic has wished to do everything possible to reform But not satisfied with that, the ultra-sentimentalist has gone so far as to advocate laws prohibiting the ownership of revolvers and pistols by law-abiding citizens, on the theory u.at this will prevent the criminal from acquiring firearms.

They seem to forget that a voluntary lawbreaker would not hesitate to break a The Los Angeles murder has brought the nation up with a jerk. Why should the law-abiding citizens be entirely disarmed and left to the mercy of the criminal element? Why should the second amendment to the United States Constitution be disregarded in favor of the criminals? Why should conditions be continually made more oppressive for those who obey the law and more lenient for those who break the law? Criminals in our social structure are like weeds in a garden they must be controlled or ruin results. FIRE LOSS It is with a great deal of pleasure and pridej that the citizens of Rushville can look back upon 1927, and survey the small fire loss which was less than $8,000 for the entire year. The pleasure of looking back over this loss is one of satisfaction because no one suffered any serious financial loss; and it is with pride to know that an efficient fire force aided in keeping that loss to a minimum. A great many cities stage frequent Fire Prevention Campaigns, and much of a pow-wow is made during these events.

Here in Rushville no observance of this kind is held. This fire prevention goes on every day, without the glamour of brass bands and the waving of flags. More shingle roofs were replaced last year than ever before, and there will be more this year. Each time that fire resisting roof material is applied, it plays a most important part in fire prevention, and the blare of speech making and glaring posters are not needed to wake up enthusiasm to prevent fire. The school children practice their fire drills almost weekly.

Business men keep their places clean. Bad chimneys and flues are being rebuilt, hazardous buildings are repaired or torn down, and there is a system about the whole affair that is significant in portraying that this fire prevention campaign is an every day affair. Added also to these factors, are other things. In case of a fire there is a telephone service to be relied upon, with no messages to be relayed by an operator. There is a water-works system owned by the people, that stands ready to combat that blaze and there are fire alarm boxes on street corners which telegraph instantly in summoning the firemen.

All of these things play their part conspicuously in keeping down the fire loss in Rushville. It is truly something to be looked upon with pleasure and pride! 5WWT OF SWEATERS! BY RODNEY DUTCIIER XBA Service Writer One of the' things which we can wonder about these days is how soon we may expect a woman to be elected to the Senate. Two have been elected governors and a half dozen have been elected to the House, where four are serving now. Thus far it does not appear that the first elected senator- it be will be chosen in the poll of next November, although one or more candidates for the distinction may set up shop. Mrs Edith Nourse Rogers, the adorable congresswoman from Lowell. has been urged to run against Senator David YValsh this year but she has too much common sense.

Even the able-bodied males of her state who are eligible for the Republican nomination are understood to he bowing themselves out and it is likely that the about Mrs. Rogers is partly inspired by some machine politicians who would prefer a male politician for her job. If Mrs. Medill McCormick is elected congresswoman-at-large from Illinois this year, she will be in a position to oppose Senator Deneen in the state primaries of 1930. The ways of Illinois politics are dark and deep but if 1930 is to produce a it be senatrim more likely to be Mrs McCormick than any other lady now on the political scene.

Every drunk man should not pass a blind beggar without giving him something. He might be blind too, some day. THE WAY THEY BID IT IN 1880 Fire prevention in an old issue in Rushville. The records of the council on July 1, 1880, stated that a motion was made where councilman is instructed to interview the taxpayers and residents of his ward, and ascertain whether they will contribute for the purchase of a hand fire engine or be assessed for fire Nowadays the councilmen have to ask some board or commission in Indianapolis. More than 11,000 new banks have been organized in the United States since 1914, an increase of about 35 per cent Most bank failures. according to officials of the larger banks, are caused by the fact that there are too many banks. In some states there has been a bank for each 740 persons, while in one eastern state one bank sufficed for over 73.000 inhabitants.
