Showing some signs of life passing game is slowly emerging under Lewis By Kamon Simpson The Macon Telegraph ATLANTA Bill Lewis watched game against Clemson from the sideline studied it closer on film Sunday and announced his evaluation of Georgia pass ing game on Tuesday getting the first year Georgia Tech coach said not quite there Shawn Jones HE a If there was one aspect about Lewis that seemed to spark more curiosity and excitement than anything else when he was hired in January then it was the slick passing at tack that he craft ed in three years at East Carolina And when Lewis brought along most of his offensive assistants from East Carolina Tech fans hoped that quarterback Shawn Jones would become another Jeff Blake the star quarterback last year Instead the Yellow Jackets had to use their rushing game to rally against Division IAA opponent Western Carolina in the season opener were beginning to won der if we would ever be the kind of passing team we were expected to Jones said just living up to our advance billing the first couple of games In 20 16 win over Clemson rushing game was Airing it out Georgia Tech Shawn passing statistics from the first three games of 1991 compared to the first three games of this year Date Opponent Att CompYds hit TD Result 8 31 91 Penn State 31 15 155 1 0 Lost 34 22 9 14 91 Boston College 29 15 234 2 0 Won 30 14 9 19 91 Virginia 29 14 214 2 1 Won 24 21 Totals 44 89 603 5 1 9 12 92 Carolina 26 15 196 0 1 Won 37 19 9 19 92 Virginia 43 25 224 0 2 Lost 55 24 9 26 92 Clemson 34 21 260 0 2 Won 20 16 Totals 61 103 680 0 5 shut down: 62 yards on 34 carries But there was no need for Tech fans to worry The long awaited Lewis passing game showed its first signs of life as Jones completed 21 of 34 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns the most solid perfor mance received from our passing game so Lewis said definitely made a lot of progress We know still a ways to go but the big thing is the players have confidence in the new offensive system now seen the Confidence is most apparent these days in Jones who has shown rapid improvement over his performance from just a season ago After three games in 1991 Jones had completed 44 of 89 passes for 603 yards and one touchdown year it seemed like there was just too much pressure on Shawn from the Tech senior guard Woodie Milam said have any big name backs we had young backs They matured but Shawn still had to carry too much of a load This season the running back sit uation is much improved even though the return of fullback Wil liam Bell has been delayed due to a knee injury Even without Bell transfer Dorsey Levens and a healthy Jeff Wright have improved the depth at the position Most importantly a rebuilt offen sive line has' provided Jones with better protection than he expected The Jackets had no returning start ers on the offensive line but Jones has found plenty of time to target his receivers Jones attempted a career high 43 passes against the Cavaliers com pleting 25 for 224 yards and two touchdowns Jones has eclipsed his 1991 numbers by completing 61 of 103 passes for five touchdowns finally comfortable with the new Jones said after the Clemson game starting to show people what this offense is ca pable of doing exciting because we know going to be doing even more passing once everyone gets used to JACKETS HONORED: Two Geor gia Tech defensive players received weekly honors from the ACC on Tuesday Senior defensive tackle Coleman Rudolph was named ACC defen sive lineman of the week He had two sacks in 20 16 upset of Clemson Junior outside linebacker Marlon Williams was named ACC defensive back of the week He graded 81 percent with 15 tackles including a sack and a tackle for a 9 yard loss INJURIES: or William Bell just been one injury after another been keeping him out of the lineup In preseason drills it was a hamstring pull After the first game it was a knee injury Now it is his elbow Bell who came back sooner than expected to play against Clemson carried twice for 11 yards but on his second carry a 2 yard gain he was slammed to the turf and suffered a dislocation of his elbow He did not return and will miss some practice this week Tech also has lost defensive line man Brian Baxter with a severely sprained ankle Cornerback Cur ley Day is questionable for Satur game because of a hamstring injury Tight end Jeff Papushak has a shoulder contusion but should be ready to play as will flanker Bobby Rodriguez who is suffering from a sprained toe Jackson signs contract with Dolphins Wednesday Sept 30 1992 The Macon
