stock car champion by simply con tinuing the consistency that has put him up front going into Sunday's 500 at Martinsville Speedway Elliott the 1988 champion in NAS top series expected this to be a transition year after making the switch from his family run team in Dawson ville Ga to Junior shops in Ronda NC Instead however the 36 year old racer has been at or near the top of the stand ings since the third race of the season one of four victories in a row that launched team toward what would be its seventh series title know always going to be a period of learning each Elliott said with Junior and (crew chief) Tim Brewer and all the experience they bring to this been able to learn each other while we do pretty well kind of expect next season to even be Elliott said winning the championship this year would be great for everybody especially since we all know how much it takes to get that job Elliott who has not won a race since the end of that early season streak is well aware that the championship is not in the bag with a 154 point lead over Davey Allison who has struggled re cently but can get hot in a hurry been through so much both physically and mentally that I think kind of amazing that he's hung in as well as he Elliott said a real strong person just like Iris father So we taking anything for granted We just have to keep trying to win races and try to get some momentum Elliott took the lead from Allison six races ago (at Watkins Glen NY) and built the margin with the help of four top 10 finishes including a second last Sunday at Dover Del two thirds and a sixth In all Elliott has finished in the top 10 in 13 of his 23 races so far this season Meanwhile gMlison who still is reha bilitating injures from a spectacular HANDICAP PROGRAM: Macon Bibb
