Finding The Way . . . HOPEFUL STIP FORWARD By RALPH W. LOEW, D.D. Ntwiptptr IntarprlM Attn. Ecumenical agreement is one of the exciting and surprising headlines of the year. Profound theological problems have become the concern of the average citizen as well as the professional theologian. The problems center not only in the discussion of man and his meaning, and in the nature of God and the universe. They center also In a doctrinal understanding of the church and Its organization and in its way of sharing its faith. Some of these discussions can be best understood since they affect personal worship and the popular expression of a fnlth. This has no theological meaning but It could be an Important expression of unanimity. At the present time it Is a moveable festival, occuring on the first Sunday after the first full moon that occurs after March 21. That could mean any Sunday In the period of thirty-five days. It is now proposed that the date always be the second Sunday of April. That brings a common understanding and it has nothing to do with the content of the festival. That suggest* other such common agreements which might be considered. For instance, the use of the Lord's Prayer is unanimously a part of Christian worship. Yet In one petition the ancient Aramaic or Greek is translated as "debts" and in other usages as "trespasses." While there are differences in the connotation sf the two words, they can be used Interchangeably. To agree jpon one or the other would not be a matter of great doctrinal dislocation and it would indicate ecumenical agreement in small matters. A third discussion would also include the Jewish faith. All Jews and Christians accept the Ten Commandments as basic moral law. In some communions these statements are numbered with the statement "I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have any other gods before me. Thou shalt not make any graven images," divided as Commandments One and Two. In this way, the two injunctions concerning covetousness are combined as the Tenth Commandment. Other communions combine the first two and divide the latter. It's all well and good, except that references to the other commandments becomes confusing. Ecumenical agreement Is not easily accomplished for It In Vol yen both history and contemporary agreement. It demands patience* a few of these minor evidences might bring some Immediate hope of the far larger possibilities. Sunday School 9:45 n.m. Bro. Robert Dulaney, Sunday School Supt. will be in charge. Morning worship 11:00 a.m. Message by the pastor.
